"Start of Something New" is the first song heard in High School Musical the movie and on the movie soundtrack. It is performed by Troy Bolton (voiced by Drew Seeley and partially by Zac Efron) and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens). The song is also featured on the Disney+ spin-off series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and its soundtrack.
Summary[]
This song is when Troy and Gabriella first meet. During the "Rock the House Contest" at the teen New Year's Eve party Troy and Gabriella are randomly chosen to sing in front of everybody. At first, they're both shy, but eventually they warm up to each other and give an amazing performance with the crowd going wild.
Later in the movie, after his teammates, Chad, Jason and Zeke tell Troy how they tried to break him and Gabriella up, Troy goes to Gabriella's house to apologize. He goes on her balcony and serenades her with a reprise version of the song, causing Gabriella to realize how much Troy truly cares about her and forgives him.
In the spin-off series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, the song is performed by students Nini (Olivia Rodrigo), E.J. (Matt Cornett), and Gina (Sofia Wylie) as their audition song to star in East High's production of High School Musical. An acoustic version featuring Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett was also recorded and uploaded on DisneyMusicVevo's channel on YouTube.

- This is one of only two songs in the first film where Zac sings, most notably the opening and closing lines; Drew Seeley does the majority of Troy's singing. The other song with Zac's partial lead vocals is Breaking Free.
- Seeley sang the entirely of Troy's parts in this song during the High School Musical concert, when Efron was filming Hairspray.
