"Steal" is the fifth episode of Win or Lose. It centers on Ira whose loneliness is represented by him imagining things in a 2D cartoon fantasy-adventure life.
Synopsis[]
Ira is an extremely imaginative 10-year-old who creates vivid fantasy worlds to entertain himself. He doesn't have a lot of friends, but he likes to spend time with his older sister, Taylor—except when he's forced to go to her boring softball games. When Taylor starts dating one of her teammates, Ira feels left in the dust. He befriends a group of older teens—fellow outsiders who hang out at the softball field. Ira's new buddies, who seem to have a penchant for getting into trouble, invite him to join in on their shenanigans. In over his head, Ira isn't sure how to stand up to these kids, but his imagination has a few ideas.[1]
Plot[]
Ira is the younger brother of softball player Taylor whom he clearly looks up to. However, he loves to imagine a brightly lit sci-fi world through his paper made telescope as he doesn't have any friends and is picked on by others due to his imaginative exclamations. He is constantly annoying Taylor who is trying to focus on the game, something he clearly doesn't care much for. After a great game, Ira tries to get Taylor to listen to him, only for her to get distracted by Yuwen when he admits that he likes her, pushing Ira aside.
Ira wanders off and encounters the Bleacher Creatures, a trio of unkempt trouble making teenagers, lead by Brian Dyson and his friends Rinna and Chicken-Kev. He manages to make good with them after complimenting Chicken-Kev's situation. After the Bleacher Creatures egg Frank's car, Ira covers for them by claiming that it was raining eggs. Ira is embraced by the teens, though at home Taylor scolds him for befriending them. When their parents question Ira's new friends, he manages to redirect them towards Taylor when he mentions that she has a boyfriend now, that being Yuwen. Taylor starts to further push Ira out to hang with Yuwen.
The next time they are at the game, Ira reunites with the Bleacher Creatures who offer that they play "snack shack attack". Basically, Ira distracts Cheryl, the concessions stand owner while they break in through the back to steal some snacks. Ira imagines the whole scenario as a space faring adventure with the group acting as a "rebellion" against the system. Despite nearly getting caught, they succeed in their theft, though Ira does notice Cheryl's sadness. He continues to join the Bleacher Creatures and spends a good day with them, voicing his concern over the fact that his sister doesn't spend time with him anymore.
Ira joins the Bleacher Creatures to a house party where he is left with the snacks, only to hallucinate the gummy fish calling him a thief for what he has done. Odo stops by to tell him, "there are many fish in the sea, choose wisely." He goes to talk to the Bleacher Creatures who are in the middle of a failed transaction with Rochelle who flees from them. As Chicken-Kev hops into a van to chase them, Ira sees Brian's true nature; a monster, as he takes his paper telescope and destroys it, causing Ira to run away.
Ira solemnly walks home just in time to see his mother taking a very angry Taylor (who apparently had a love spat with Yuwen about something) to the game. As Taylor and Yuwen continue to argue, Ira tries to speak with Taylor about the theft at the concession stand, but she refuses to listen to him, stating that she no longer wants to look after childish boys or make them feel better about themselves. Ira goes to the concession and leaves behind some gummy fish as well as a message to Cheryl admitting to what he has done, only to run into Brian with a repaired telescope.
Brian apologizes for his behavior as Ira is left wondering whether he should take it or not.
