Steng is a character from the 2007 Disney live-action film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. He is a spy who works for the East India Trading Company at the time of Davy Jones serving with Lord Cutler Beckett during the War Against Piracy.
Background[]
Born in China, Steng served as a spy who works for the East India Trading Company. At some unknown point, he joined the EITC being hired as a spy to keep a lookout for the Pirate Lord of Singapore, Sao Feng, with Lord Cutler Beckett and Ian Mercer working around the time throughout his life. During his duty, he disguised himself as a pirate sporting a sword depicting a fake dragon tattoo on it and later infiltrated the bathhouse.
Appearances[]
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End[]
Steng is seen attending the meeting with Sao Feng, Barbossa, and Elizabeth Swann at the bathhouse. During a battle, Steng's tattoo started to run while Feng realized the deception, thinking Steng was serving Barbossa. A battle then occurred within the bathhouse where Steng and the EITC began an ambush led by Ian Mercer. Throughout the ambush, Barbossa, Elizabeth, and Jack's crew managed to escape from the ambush along with Feng and his men. Having escaped, Feng then realized Steng's true actions as he was affiliated with the EITC, leading Feng to execute him. It is unknown who killed Steng in the process, though it is presumed that it could be either one of Sao Feng's men or even Feng himself who killed Steng.
After escaping from Davy Jones' Locker, Jack Sparrow, Barbossa, and the rest of the crew of the Black Pearl discovered Steng's dead body who is lying down on the Black Sand Beach, along with the Kraken who was also found dead on the beach. Pintel then realizes this and recognizes the same man he met at Singapore upon staring at Steng's corpse.
Trivia[]
- According to Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott's first screenplay draft for At World's End, the character who would later be repurposed into Steng was simply one of the unnamed Chinese pirates in Singapore and Will Turner (under his alias "Lang Si") was the one whose tattoo melted in front of Sao Feng.[1]
