Sunspot (real name Roberto da Costa) is a character who appears in the Marvel Studios Animation series X-Men '97, which is a direct continuation of the 1992 X-Men animated series.

Sunspot was created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod.

Background[]

He is a Brazilian mutant who can transform into pure solar energy. Much like Jubilee, he is taken in by the X-Men after saving him from the Friend of Humanity. He comes from a wealthy family and his parents know he is a mutant, even though he had been keeping it a secret from them.

Abilities[]

  • Solar energy: Roberto has the power to absorb solar energy and produce onto himself. This results in his appearance changing.
  • Flight: Roberto has the ability to fly.
  • Energy blasts: Roberto can fire off fire base energy from his body. This can be done with small fire blasts or long continuous concussive force.
