THX

THX Ltd. is an American-based company headquartered in San Rafael, California. THX stands for Tomlinson Holman Experiment. Its name comes from the 1971 George Lucas film THX 1138. The company's purpose is to create "high fidelity" audio for surround sound theaters and other uses. In 2016, the company was acquired by Singaporean consumer technology company Razer Inc. THX was formerly a subsidiary of Creative Technology Limited (2002-2016), and originally Lucasfilm (1983-2002).

THX's services were often used in The Walt Disney Company, Pixar, 20th Century Studios, Warner Bros., and Buena Vista releasing feature-length films, typically for home media use until late 2012. When it came to Pixar feature-length films, it was typically for theatrical and home video purposes.

In 1996, the company debuted a robot mascot named Tex.

Trivia[]

The logo has been known to frighten younger viewers mainly with its audio trademark, the Deep Note.
In the Bill Nye the Science Guy episode "Sound", the logo was parodied as "SOUND: THE AUDIENCE IS LISTENING". Also, an orchestra can be heard tuning up.
The Incredibles is the only Disney Pixar DVD to contain the Cavalcade trailer, like the 20th Century Studios DVD releases of the Star Wars Prequels, including The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.
The 2003 DVD of Finding Nemo is the only DVD that contains two separate THX logos. The first disc includes Tex 2: Moo Can and the second disc includes the extended version of the 1996 Tex trailer.
A Pixar version of THX Optimizer appears on Pixar DVDs until 2006.
Some tapes, such as the 2002 VHS of Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas and the 2005 VHS of Bambi do have the THX logo on the packaging or tape label, but do not appear on the actual tapes. The opposite can be seen on the 2001 VHS of The Princess Diaries and the 2002 VHS of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, where the packaging and labels have no mention of THX but the logo does appear on the actual tape.
From 2010 to 2012, the Amazing Life trailer only appeared on 20th Century Studios DVD and Blu-ray releases of Avatar and the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. Thus, the restored Broadway trailer appeared on the Star Wars Original Trilogy Blu-ray release.
Cinderella is the only French DVD to contain the THX trailer The Science of Sensation, also on the US DVDs of Star Wars Revenge of the Sith and Titanic (Paramount).
