Tail is one of the five lands of Kumandra that appears in Disney's 2021 animated feature film, Raya and the Last Dragon. It is located in the far east of Kumandra and is known for being a desert. The land was ruled by the Tail Chief before she died of starvation after rigging her throne to set traps for those who would try to steal the Tail tribe's piece of the orb, unlike the other chiefs who were turned to stone by the Drunn.
Background[]
After the dragon Sisu defeats the Druun using a magical orb that contained the magic of her siblings (but resulting in the Druun turning all of the dragons, except for Sisu, to stone), Sisu disappeared after using the orb and all of Kumandra were divided and wanted the power of the orb for themselves, resulting Kumandra being turned into 5 separate lands; Heart, Fang, Tail, Talon and Spine. The Land of Heart came into possession of the orb and kept it safe from anyone who wishes to possess it. 5 centuries after this, the current chief of Heart, Chief Benja invited all of the other tribes, including Tail, to his home in hopes of finally ending the rivalry.
At first, his plan goes smoothly as everybody starts to get along, but everything falls apart when Namaari, princess of the Fang Tribe, tricks Benja's daughter, Raya into showing her where the orb is located and notifies her people, as well as the other tribes. As they began to fight over the orb, Benja intervenes and gives them to choice of finally unifying together and bring Kumandra back to what it once was. However, he is shot by an arrow and as the tribes fight over the orb, it is dropped on the ground and broken into five pieces. The orb's destruction causes the Druun to reappear and the tribes take their pieces separately and evacuate the island. The Tail tribe take their piece back to their land but just about all of them are turned to stone since their home is a water-free desert as the Druun is weakened by water. However, one of them, a boy named Boun survives by always staying in a boat on the water.
6 years after the debacle at Heart, Tail is visited by a grown Raya, who is seeking to collect the orb pieces to fix Kumandra and is traveling through Tail on her pet Tuk Tuk. She summons Sisu for help and they soon manage to find the Tail Chief's hideout where they see that she died of starvation from trapping herself in her own booby-traps. As Raya soon collects the piece from the Chief’s corpse, a grown Namaari and some soldiers from Fang arrive to steal the piece, but Raya and Sisu (who was transformed into a human after touching the orb piece) manage to escape and end up on a boat managed by a kid named Boun, who Raya pays to guide his boat out of the land.
Later, the orb is put back together and it causes a magical storm that reverses the Druun's magic and turns everyone who was turned to stone back to normal, including Boun's people at Tail, such as his parents. The people of Tail and the other tribes come to Heart to celebrate, finally coming together in unity.
Trivia[]
- It is unknown who was appointed the new Tail Chief after the previous one's death.
- Though Tail is mostly consisted of a desert, there are a few sources within the land such as the hidden creek where Raya meets Sisu and the lake where Boun's ship was usually docked at.
- Tail's desert resembles Vietnam's White Sand Dunes.
- One of the creatures Raya and Tuk Tuk encounter at Tail is a tiny lizard scurrying across the desert. The lizard the two encounter has a striking resemblance to Bruni from Frozen II, to which the lizard uses a movement similar to Bruni's.
