Amity Blight is a recurring character in the Disney Channel animated series The Owl House.

Background

Personality

In the beginning Amity did not seem to be a nice person, but that slowly changed as season one progressed. She has a sense of integrity, as she was shocked that her mentor Lilith made her cheat in her duel with Luz without her knowledge, and seeing as how Luz's own mentor, Eda, cheated as well, Amity called off the everlasting oath magic she cast on Luz so that she could continue her own training to become a witch. This indicates Amity truly wants to be a great witch, but one of her own merit and not resort to cheating or dishonesty. "Lost in Language" further reveals that Amity has a concealed softer side, which she keeps hidden so as not to demonstrate weakness and reads to children.

Deep down Amity is kind, selfless, and sensitive. In "Understanding Willow", she was forced to pretend to be mean to Willow after her parents blackmailed her into ditching her and eventually made amends with her, regaining their friendship. In "Enchanting Grom Fright", Amity had developed a crush on Luz, which eventually led to them becoming a couple.

Physical appearance

Amity has pale skin, golden eyes, pointy ears, and chin-length, brown hair dyed two tones of mint green with the brown roots showing, and has a ponytail pulling the front hair out of her face. After "Through the Looking Glass Ruins", she changes her hair color to lilac and wears it down in a bob cut. When attending school, she wears a gray tunic with a dark gray belt, hoodie, and boots. As part of the Abomination track, the color of her sleeves and leggings are orchid. The rest of her attire includes wearing triangle-shaped black earrings and black nail polish.

When not attending school, Amity dresses in a black short-sleeved dress with orchid (later dark red) tights and black point shoes with golden crescent moon buckles. Around her neck, she wore a magical orchid gemstone necklace, which her mother used to send her mental messages. In "Escaping Expulsion", Amity destroyed this necklace when she came to Luz's rescue and stood up to her mother. She replaced this necklace with one that had a dark purple pendant set in gold.

During her stay in the human realm, she grew out her hair. Her lilac hairdye had faded over the months and her brown roots started showing again.

Powers and abilities

  • Magic: Despite being a witch-in-training, Amity appears to be highly skilled in magic. Like all witches, her connection comes from a sac of magic bile attached to her heart. She can cast the Spell Circle to cast spells. It is hinted in "Escaping Expulsion" that Amity is getting stronger in her magic when she tackles down one of her parent's Abomination inventions.
    • Abomination Magic: Amity is a top student in Abominations magic. She can create and control slimy mindless creatures known as abominations.
    • Fireballs: Since "Adventures in the Elements", Amity has been learning to generate fireballs, which at the time required her to use a training wand, until she learned to cast the spell on her own.
    • Barrier Cage: Amity can create a tall, circular cage that cause mild pain when touched.
  • Staff: At some point, Amity takes ownership of a cat palisman named Ghost.

Backstory

Amity Blight grew up under a highly privileged family. Considered something of a black sheep, Amity struggled with acceptance from not just her elder siblings Emira and Edric, but also her own parents, Odalia and Alador, who had high aspirations for her. The only source of comfort for her was a fellow witch her age named Willow who, unlike her, was incapable of displaying the same level of magical prowess that she did. Despite this, Amity did everything she could to remain friends with her. This all changed when Odalia and Alador discovered her friendship with Willow and gave her an ultimatum; either cut ties with Willow, or have her barred from going to Hexside. Sad and confused, Amity told Willow that she was weak and did not want to be friends with her ever again. Her parents arranged for her to make new friends with similarly high classed students and Amity grew to be a bitter and snooty young witch, going so far as to dye her hair to match her siblings and continue to mock and belittle Willow's powers as a witch.

Season One

The Owl House 9

Amity having become a high ranking witch.

When Amity is introduced, she is at the top of her class and has transitioned into a vain witch who mocks Willow's inferior attempts at trying to perform Abomination magic. She shows no compassion or encouragement and goes so far as to show off to her classmates and teachers. This all changes when Willow suddenly shows up with an effective Abomination that seems to outclass her own. Amity becomes curious and quickly learns that Willow's Abomination is in actuality a human girl named Luz Noceda who wanted to see the inside of Hexside. She attempts to have her exposed, going so far as trying to have Luz killed, but she manages to escape and Amity is somewhat outed for being jealous of Willow. By her next appearance, Amity has grown to view Luz as not just an annoyance, but also a rival of sorts as her optimistic attitude despite her lack of magical ability clashes with Amity's more conservative and direct approach to magic.

While attending a convention, Luz attempts to make amends with Amity, but Amity has no interest and instead mocks King. This results in the two of them accepting a witches duel to determine Luz's future in magic. The duel ends in a draw when Amity discovers that her idol, Lilith Clawthorne, planned to cheat, humiliating her. Luz ends up comforting Amity who in turn allows Luz to continue learning magic. Amity slowly begins to lose her hatred towards Luz and instead starts becoming perplexed by her motives. While catching Luz, Emira, and Edric looking through her diary, Amity comes to the conclusion that Luz is a bully, but following a night of danger and seeing that Luz genuinely cares for her well-being, changes her mind and realizes that she herself needs to change and they bond over their shared love of The Good Witch Azura.

Wing It Like Witches (86)

Amity sides with her true friends.

Amity becomes nicer to Luz and starts drifting from her fake friends. However, she still feels guilty with Willow. After nearly erasing her memories, and entering her mind to fix them, Amity comes clean about why she acted the way she did with her; she was too weak to stand up for herself. With a heavy burden lifted off her shoulders, Amity and Willow make amends and eventually rekindle their friendship. Amity begins to notice that Luz is putting out more to help and stand up for her. When Grom (the Boiling Isles' version of prom) comes around, it quickly becomes apparent that Amity's feelings towards Luz have gone from confusion to intense infatuation. Amity realizes that she can no longer stand near Luz without becoming nervous or distressed. This does not stop her from helping her finally getting back at Boscha at Grudgby. The match results in Amity spraining her ankle and she remains bedridden for awhile. This unfortunately means that she does not visit the Emperor's Coven, her desired goal.

Season Two

Amity's first appearance in Season 2 has her participating in a demonstration of the Abomaton to potential investors of Blight Industries. During the demonstration, her photo from Grom slips out of her sleeve and she destroys the Abomination to protect it, frustrating Odalia who then notices the picture. The next day at Hexside, Amity gives Luz a (very fresh) fairy pie to celebrate her return before Odalia's voice comes on the speaker calling them, Gus, and Willow into Principal Bump's office, where Bump reluctantly expels Luz, Gus, and Willow from Hexside. Even when Luz personally asks her for help, Amity feels powerless to help due to her mother's domineering presence, partly via the necklace she wears which Odalia uses to telepathically communicate with her daughter, Later on at Blight manor, Amity discovers that Luz went with Odalia to take her place in hopes of lifting the ban. Amity works with Willow and Gus to enter Blight Industries' demonstration of the Abomaton 2.0, where Luz is in serious trouble as Odalia apparently wants her dead and does not stop the dangerous demo. Shouting "Stay Away from my Luz", Amity comes to the rescue by interfering with the Abomaton, destroys the necklace and demands that her mother let her friends back into Hexside or she'll destroy the Abomaton in front of the buyers. Odalia relents, though she threatens to go back on the deal and then some before Alador stops her.

Through the Looking Glass Ruins (25)

Amity gives Luz a kiss on the cheek.

Luz later visits Amity at the library hoping to find the diary of Philip Wittebane that has info on how to get to the back to human realm. Amity leads Luz to the forbidden stacks where no one but the master librarian Malphas is allowed. Not wanting to get Amity in trouble, Luz suggests going back, but Amity is determined to help. They find the diary but also an echo mouse that ate most of the pages, to which a frustrated Luz shouts "You Little Rat!", alerting Malphas who kicks them out of the library and fires Amity. Distraught, Amity does not want to hear from Luz but admits to her confused feelings before she goes home. Later at Blight Manor, Amity tries to explain her feelings to the twins, but Emira says "You weren't happy before" before asking Amity if she wants her hair dyed green again. Amity decides to change her hairstyle and color with Emira's help. Luz arrives shortly having getting Amity's job back, and is stunned at Amity's new lavender hair. Amity notices the echo mouse on Luz's leg and reveals that it can play back whatever it eats, thus playing Philip's introduction to his diary. Touched by Luz petting the mouse, Amity kisses Luz on the cheek, though she immediately becomes flustered and quickly retreats into her house muttering, leaving Luz in shock.

Knock, Knock, Knockin' on Hooty's Door (161)

Amity and Luz become a couple.

One day, she is abducted by Hooty and brought to the Owl House where Luz finds her in the basement. When Luz finds her, Hooty sends the girls to a Tunnel of Love he made to try and get them together. While Amity is impressed and enjoys the ride, Luz destroys it out of fear that Amity will hate it. After Hooty has a breakdown upon failing to help anyone, Luz finally asks Amity out, only for Amity to beat her to it. Soon Luz gets sick and, after learning where to get Titan's Blood, an ingredient for the Portal, she, Eda, and King go to the Knee to get it, taking the portal key with her.

While there they find Hunter and take him captive. As they search, Amity gets encrypted messages from Luz that Hunter interprets as veiled threats. Upon being found by the Emperor’s Coven, they reluctantly free Hunter, who leaves them to get the blood and they are thrown down a fissure. Eda flies them out and she and King go after Hunter only to find out the blood dried up long ago. After a brief conversation, Amity realizes the encrypted messages form words and realizes what Luz was telling her. She tries to offer Hunter a place by their side, but he attacks her upon seeing the key.

Follies at the Coven Day Parade (9)

A pair of sweet potatoes.

While Amity has the upper hand, Hunter threatens to come after Luz if she does not hand it over. Amity reluctantly does so and she, Eda, and King return to the Owl House where Luz hugs her. After talking with Eda about how to break the bad news to Luz, Amity revealed that she broke the key before handing it over and some of the blood seeped into her glove. During Coven Day, Amity asks Luz how her trip home went, but Luz says refuses to answer. After Luz leaves, she forgets her phone and Amity thinks Luz is withholding things.

After talking with Willow, Amity finds Luz "abducting" Kikimora and agrees to help. They make it to the docks before Kikimora turns on them. They fight until Terra Snapdragon arrives and takes Kikimora. After she leaves, Amity convinces Luz to tell her the truth about visiting home and they meet back up with the other residents of the Owl House and watch Belos announce that the Day of Unity is a month away. One day at Hex Side, Amity tells Luz that the author of the Good Witch Azura was having a book signing and, believing the author can travel between worlds, they head to the bookstore only to discover it was closed.

They find who they believe to be the author and chase after her, only to learn she is fake and part of a scam to profit off the books that came from the Human Realm. They then meet up with Willow, Gus, Viney, and Skara who had formed their own flying Derby team known as the Emerald Entrails, when showing them their picture and much to their surprise, they see Hunter in the picture. After her father forces her to attend tryouts for the Emperor’s Coven rather than fighting in the Bonesborough Brawl, she enlists the help of Luz, along with her siblings, to fight in the brawl. However, Alador finds out after Luz triggers the alarms in the Abomaton he had escort Amity and pulls her out of the tournament. Angry at both her father and girlfriend, Amity uses an invisibility glyph to runaway.

Reaching Out (155)

Luz and Amity pick flowers.

Luz finds her and reveals her actions that day are from trying to divert attention from thinking of the anniversary of her father’s death. They hear screaming and Amity goes to find Warden Wrath mutated and fights alongside her father, who is reluctant to accept her help. After Warden Wrath is subdued, she reveals her grievances with having her parents plan her life and he agrees to give her the freedom she wants. A few days before the Day of Unity, Amity and the other students of Hexside are called to the gym for an emergency assembly. They are told by Adrian Gray Vernworth, the head of the Illusion Coven, that all young witches must be placed in a Coven before the Day of Unity, but claims he insists he wants to put temporary fake sigils on the student as Edric is brought forward for a demonstration.

However, Gus reveals the branding is real and, after being exposed, Adrian tries to brand Gus. As the other students are about to be apprehended by Coven Scouts Adrian brought with him, Gus creates a school wide illusion and Amity escapes with Willow. Upon leaving, Amity receives word that everyone is in the Healing Homeroom. Unaware of Willow's growth in power, she inadvertently ruins Willow's attempts to defend them until Bump arrives with her siblings and the illusion teacher. After Gus is taken and Hunter is brought to the Homeroom, Amity and the others listen as Hunter tries to convince them he is on their side. Willow convinces them and the staff and students of Hexside, along with Hunter, take on the Scouts and save Gus, After the Emperor’s Coven leaves, she and the others listen as Hunter reveals the truth about Day of Unity.

Clouds on the Horizon (72)

Amity and Luz have their first kiss.

As Amity and her siblings try to warn their parents about the Draining Spell, Odalia catches the three and grounds them, along with breaking Amity's communication device. As Amity tries to fix it, she becomes overwhelmed and Edric and Emira try to cheer her up. Soon Luz arrives and Amity kisses her before she and her siblings try to warn her parents again. The twins go off on their own as Amity, Luz, Willow, Gus, and Hunter disguise themselves as Coven Scouts to sneak inside, but Kikimora realizes Hunter is present and blows their cover. Odalia traps the five in a bubble and Amity tries to free her and her friends when Alador frees them and having learned the truth from King, tells his wife, but all are angered when Odalia reveals she already knows and does not care.

A fight breaks out that results in Hunter being taken by Kikimora and Alador destroying the factory and all their inventory. After Odalia leaves, Amity, her father, and the others go to the airship to save Hunter. However, it is soon revealed that Gus cast an illusion on Luz and Hunter to take on each other’s appearance and, upon the spell wearing off on Hunter, they realize Luz is on her way to Belos. As they journey to the Head, Amity starts to argue with her father, Gus, and Hunter until the palismen offer them food. When they are close, various Coven Scouts attack their ship and, try as they might, it goes down. Alador holds off a hoard of Abomatons as she, Willow, King, Gus, and Hunter continue on.

King's Tide (195)

Amity stands outside Luz's house in the Human realm.

After stopping by the Coven Heads and Eda, they fly to help Luz fight Belos, who has taken on a monstrous form. Amity and her friends struggle to fight Belos until King frees The Collector. After defeating Belos and have him stop the Draining Spell, he deconstructs the Head and declares he wishes to play “Owl House”. Amity, Willow, Gus, and Hunter flee through a portal to the Human Realm where they end up stranded after King blasts Luz through the door. After staring at the empty doorway of the Old House, Luz takes her friends to her house where they are greeted by Camila and Vee.

Season Three

After Amity and her friends are effectively stranded in the Human Realm by King, they head to Luz's house where Luz reunites with her mother, who takes them all in. Over the next few months, Amity amd her friends work on making another portal back to the Boiling Isles, to no avail, while at the same time adapt to life in the Human Realm.

Thanks to Them (62)

Amity and her friends find a box.

One day the kids are in the shack learning Spanish when, Amity trips in a hole (made by Flapjack) in the floorboards. She finds a box buried underneath, containing a scroll with pictures they think may lead to a portal door. The gang soon discover it is a map leading to Titan's Blood, and decide to surprise Luz with it on Halloween. On the night of Halloween, the gang goes on the Haunted Hayride, and learn about the Wittebane brothers. Unbeknownst to them, Belos has slowly been gaining influencing over Hunter, who has Flapjack snatch the map so he and Luz could use it to find the Titan's Blood, but they get separated long enough for Belos to gain full control of Hunter's body. When the rest of the Hexside squad arrive, Belos reveals to them how Luz helped him find the Collector before attacking them. During the fight, Amity saves Vee from Belos before he knocks Amity, Willow, and Gus off of their staffs, throws Luz at them, and finally wounds Flapjack.

After Camila rescues Hunter from drowning, Belos separates from him and uses the Titan's Blood to open a portal and escapes. Amity and the others tearfully watch as a dying Flapjack sacrifices himself to save Hunter. After being questioned by Amity, Luz confesses that what Belos said about helping him find the Collector was true. However, Amity and Hunter console her before they all enter the portal to the Boiling Isles to stop Belos. Before walking into the portal herself, Amity tells Luz that she does not know what the future holds but wishes for Luz to part of it. She then kisses Luz on the cheek and walks through the portal.

For the Future (32)

Amity and her friends return to the Boiling Isles.

Upon returning to the Boiling Isles, Amity along with Luz, Willow, Hunter, Gus, and Camilla arrive at the now abandoned Owl House. They head inside for a while. During this time, Amity finds Luz in Eda's nest, thinking her egg might hatch. As she comforts her, Amity tells Luz about how she got Ghost, and her goal was to choose her own path. Hunter calls out he sees Eda and King, then left the Owl House.

Amity and the gang arrived in Bonesborough, the place was empty, but didn't see neither Eda nor King anywhere. Suddenly, giant stars appeared and the place into a fantasy and display some of the people who were turn into puppets. She hid and watched the puppets were pretending they were being attack by Eda. King and The Collector show up and were playing pretend and Eda was actually Terra pretending to be Eda. After The Collector and King took off, Amity, Luz, Willow, Gus, Hunter, and Camila were met by Mattholomule, Barcus, and Skara and took them to Hexside now called New Hexside. She reunited with Edric and Emira. Soon they are called to the gym where they find Boscha has taken control of the school and gave herself the title of president, angering Amity as she has tried without success to get Bump to form a student council. Luz tries to convince Boscha to get them to attack the Archives, but Boscha- taking advice from her advisor Miki- rejects them. After being kicked out, Luz remembers she saw Belos make an intricate glyph combination to teleport and they head to the photo lab with Mattholomule to extract it. After Hunter, Willow, and Gus wonder off, Boscha arrives with Miki, who reveals herself to be Kikimora, and are knocked out with sleeping neetles.

For the Future (278)

Amity about to meet Luz's Palisman.

Amity, Luz, Camila, and Mattholomule wake up in the detentions pit with Boscha and Kikimora watching over them. Kikimora jumps down into the pit and attacks. After Camila fumbles with an ice glyph, the pit caves in and Amity and Mattholomule are separated from the Nocedas. As the two walk in the cavers, Boscha confronts them and begs Amity to restart their friends, much to her and Mattholomule's disturbance. She rejects the offer and Boscha tries to keep them from leaving. Mattholomule creates a smoke screen and uses illusions to switch his and Amity's appearances. After spell wears off, she convinces Boscha to help them and they rally the remaining students and attack Kikimora. After Amity meets back up with her companions, they help Luz create the glyph and teleport to the Head just as Kikimora is able to blast them. Shortly after, Luz's palisman takes form and introduces everyone to Stringbean.

Shortly after, Amity and the others, save for Luz, are taken by The Collector and turned into puppets. Amity, Willow, Hunter, and Gus are used to torment Luz until Luz realizes it is not real. She and the other break free temporarily and tell Luz to wake up, giving her a light glyph before being pulled back to the archives. While a puppet, she manages to draw a light glyph to wake herself and her companions. They find themselves in the Archives and locate Camila. After reverting Camila to to normal, Amity tries to control Abomination goo but is too tired to. After Camila gives everyone a pep talk, Amity and her friends use glyphs drawn by Camila to save the others. When the Archives start to fall, she and the others are surprised when The Collector holds it up. After stopping The Archives from falling, she and the others greet The Collector and the six watch the decay blow away. As The Collector reverts the residents of the Boiling Isles back to normal, Amity happily hugs her father and ignores her mother. Afterward, The Collector brings her, Lilith, and Camila to The Owl House and she and Luz share a kiss. Shortly before The Collector leaves to go soul searching in the stars, she speaks with him.

Watching and Dreaming (410)

Luz and Amity, four years later.

Four years later, after rebuilding the Boiling Isles, Amity has learned Abomination engineering from her father and works with Lilith gathering rare texts on the Demon Realm’s past. On Luz’s eighteenth birthday, Amity kisses her as she and others surprise Luz with a belated quinceañera and watch a light show The Collector puts on.

Chibi Tiny Tales

Amity appears in the Chibi Tiny Tales short, "Lumity Date", where she goes on a date with Luz. The two try to kiss each other, but the moment keeps getting ruined by someone or something nearby. At the cinema, Amity tries to kiss Luz only for that moment to be ruined by Eda, who is also at the cinema and loudly slurping her drink. Amity makes a second attempt during a boat ride, only for the two to be attacked by a giant water monster. But at the end of their date, Luz is able to give Amity a kiss on the cheek (after checking there are no more surprises).

Trivia

  • Amity has been well received by both critics and fans of the show, who praised her character development and Whitman's performance.
  • The name Amity has its roots in Latin, meaning "friendship", which could represent her budding relationship with Luz, and Willow before her. Her surname, Blight, on the other hand, is a disease in plants caused by fungi, which most likely relates to the formerly troubled relationship between Amity and Willow.
  • In "Enchanting Grom Fright", Amity is revealed to have a crush on Luz, marking her as Disney's first major animated character to be explicitly LGBT. Dana Terrace later confirmed that Amity is a lesbian, making her Disney's first openly lesbian major character.
    • Ironically, her voice actress Mae Whitman, came out as pansexual a year after the show's premiere.
    • In "Thanks to Them", Willow's scrapbook has a page featuring photos of Luz and Amity together. Next to their pictures are two pride heart stickers: a lesbian one for Amity, and a bisexual one for Luz.[2]
  • Amity's cat palisman, Ghost, is based on the real-life cat of Dana Terrace.
