Talon is one of the five lands of Kumandra that appears in Disney's 2021 animated feature film, Raya and the Last Dragon. It is located south of Kumandra and is known for being a market-based shantytown. The land was once ruled by the Talon Chief, Dang Hai (before he gets petrified by the Druun), and a woman named Dang Hu took up the role as Chieftess.
Background[]
After the dragon Sisu defeats the Druun using a magical orb that contained the magic of her siblings (but resulting in the Druun turning all of the dragons, except for Sisu, to stone), Sisu disappeared after using the orb and all of Kumandra were divided and wanted the power of the orb for themselves, resulting Kumandra being turned into 5 separate lands; Heart, Fang, Tail, Talon and Spine. The Land of Heart came into possession of the orb and kept it safe from anyone who wishes to possess it. 5 centuries after this, the current chief of Heart, Chief Benja invited all of the other tribes, including Talon, to his home in hopes of finally ending the rivalry.
At first, his plan goes smoothly as everybody starts to get along, but everything falls apart when Namaari, princess of the Fang Tribe, tricks Benja's daughter, Raya into showing her where the orb is located and notifies her people, as well as the other tribes. As they began to fight over the orb, Benja intervenes and gives them to choice of finally unifying together and bring Kumandra back to what it once was. However, he is shot by an arrow and as the tribes fight over the orb, it is dropped on the ground and broken into five pieces. The orb's destruction causes the Druun to reappear and the tribes take their pieces separately and evacuate the island. The Talon tribe take their piece back to their land where they manage to ward off the Druun due to their land being on top of water since the Druun is weakened by water. However, the Druun manage to turn the chief of Talon into stone and the tribe was soon ruled by a greedy woman name Dang Hu, who took up the role as Chieftess.
6 years after the debacle at Heart, Talon is visited by a grown Raya, Boun from the Tail tribe and Sisu, who was brought back to life by Raya and has transformed into a human. Raya ventures into Talon and goes to the Chief's palace to try and get the orb piece with the help of a thieving baby named Noi and her pet Ongis, but soon discovers that he has been turned to stone. Sisu wanders into Talon to try and buy a gift for the Chief (since she believes that giving a gift is customary to establish trust) but she is soon led astray by Dang Hu who seeks to steal the orb pieces that she and Raya has collected and leave her for the Drunn before Raya saves her and they get the Talon orb piece from Dang Hu and soon evacuate with Noi and her Ongis joining them.
Later, the orb is put back together and it causes a magical storm that reverses the Druun's magic and turns everyone who was turned to stone back to normal, including Noi's people, mother, grandmother and Dang Hai at Talon. The people of Talon and the other tribes come to Heart to celebrate, finally coming together in unity.
Trivia[]
- The markets of Talon don't accept being paid with credit and expect to be paid immediately.
- Both chiefs of Talon have the word "dang" within their names, making it possible that "dang" is the name of Talon's chieftain title.
- Talon resembles an amalgam of Indonesia's Majapahit Empire; its floating markets resemble those found in Thailand and Vietnam.
