"Tattletale Heart" is the second segment of the thirty-eighth episode of Recess.
Synopsis[]
Gus knows who started a savage food fight and refuses to tell Miss Finster. But will she force him to tattle?
Plot[]
While at lunch, Gus witnesses someone picking up a wad of mashed potatoes and toss it, causing a food fight to break out. Afterwards, Miss Finster forces all the kids to clean up, followed by a confession. Should no one confess, no one will be allowed to recess. Gus tells the Gang that he knows who did it, but they tell him not to blab as it goes against the Kid Code of Honor, which is punishable by sticking his head in a garbage pail. This begins to eat away at Gus and he even consults with Guru Kid about it, who tells him that it is okay to tell the truth, but when Gus whispers who it is, he immediately takes it back and tells him to hide the truth.
Miss Finster begins to interrogate every student about who the culprit is and reaches Gus when he starts to look guilty. Afterwards, she reveals that she ID'd the culprit as Randall, who is taken away. All the kids attempt to punish Gus for breaking the Code of Honor, but Miss Finster intervenes. Though Jerome promises to punish him later when Finster's not around, Miss Finster declares that Gus told her nothing and that Randall was exposed by the power of science. As she explained, she found a mashed potato fingerprint on the tray at the scene of the crime. She then offered Randall a can of soda to obtain his fingermark before sending it off to the Board of Education Crime Lab for analysis. Gretchen questions how Miss Finster came to suspect Randall to begin with. As it turns out, save for Gus and his friends, every other kid Miss Finster interrogated all named Randall as the prime suspect. As Miss Finster walks out, mocking the Kid's Code of Honor, Gus express his disbelief that everyone broke the code. The others defend that they couldn't lose recess. Gretchen moralizes that telling the truth is not all black and white and Gus says that this must mean that the Kid Code of Honor is wrong, calling everyone out on their hypocrisy. King Bob rules that since they don't nearly have nearly enough pails, he pardons everyone. The kids decide to drop the issue all together, but Gus questions how everyone knew Randall was the guilty one when he was the only one who witnessed him. Everyone looks at Guru Kid, who tries making up some wise proverb but quickly admits that he blabbed.

Trivia[]
- The name of this episode is a spoof of Edgar Allan Poe's The Telltale Heart.
- Miss Finster calls up Cornchip Girl in the Cs, despite the fact that her real name is Theresa LaMaise. This was done obviously because the writers had not given her a name yet.
