- Patrick Wilson's feature film debut.
- Ron Howard was supposed to direct with Russell Crowe in talks to play Sam Houston. Both dropped out when they could not agree on a budget. Viggo Mortensen was up for Houston, but Dennis Quaid was ultimately cast.
- Ethan Hawke was considered for Bill Travis.
- Sean Penn was considered for Jim Bowie.
- Robert Rodriguez was interested in directing as was Steven Spielberg.
- Efren Ramirez considered auditioning, but instead decided to star in Napoleon Dynamite.
