"The Break-up" is the first segment of the fourteenth episode of Recess.
Synopsis[]
The gang breaks up when a report to write about their best friend prompts division as all five of the others write about T.J., prompting T.J. to realize that he has five best friends, not just one.
Plot[]
Miss Grotke tasks the children with writing an essay on who their best friend is. This immediately concerns T.J. as his friends all assume that he is writing about them. As he heads to recess, Randall approaches him as he too has a similar assignment and wants him as his subject, even though he admits that they do not get along. When T.J. is approached by his friends, they all quickly get into an argument with one another when they all learn that they are all writing about T.J. He tells them to stop, but when they ask who his best friend is, he cannot decide and they all break up with him, much to Randall's pleasure.
The next day at school, T.J. tries to look for his friends, only for Randall to come and tell him that they have all found new friends. Vince has joined King Bob's security guards, Gretchen has joined up with Upside-Down Girl, Gus has become an assistant to the Diggers, Mikey has become Guru Kid's apprentice and Spinelli is now the leader of the Kindergartners and sends Tubby after them. On the day of the assignment, T.J. asks Miss Grotke if he can read his paper out loud. His paper details that he does not have one best friend, but five and that he appreciates each of them for who they are, earning a rounding applause from everyone in the class. T.J.'s Gang apologize to each other and to him for being jerks and they head home, leaving a dejected Randall to play tetherball with himself.

- When all of T.J.'s friends leave and join other groups, it is never made clear which of the "new best friend" they had joined as Vince, Gus, and Spinelli seem to have multiple.
