"The Cartoon" is an episode of Wander Over Yonder.
Synopsis[]
Lord Hater orders the Watchdogs to make an action cartoon about him.
Plot[]
Lord Hater has commissioned a propaganda cartoon be made about himself titled Lord Hater: The Greatest in the Galaxy. He claims that it is to spread fear to everyone, but Commander Peepers deduces that it is so he can once again impress Lord Dominator. Throughout the episode, the cartoon plays while Hater, Peepers and two other Watchdogs watch the episode play out and comment on it.
Hater has arrived on a planet to acquire a staff that will give him more power and is accompanied by a very nerdy depiction of Peepers (which Hater seems to enjoy, much to Peepers' chagrin). They are suddenly attacked by Emperor Awesome who has brought his minions with him. Hater calls upon his muscular minions (which Peepers is flummoxed by) as they do battle. Afterwards, Hater and Awesome fight (though the animation is not shown as they ran out of budget).
Hater succeeds in defeating Awesome and acquires the staff, but suddenly a goofier Wander and horse version of Sylvia arrive on the scene (causing Hater to laugh as he finds the depiction funny). However, Wander empowers Sylvia and himself to fight Hater and his minions in fantastic glory (this angers Hater as he wanted it to be "true to life", but the Watchdogs inform him that that is exactly what happens when they meet Wander). Wander tells Hater that he wanted him to be his friend and he admits his own faults resulting in the two of them becoming friends (Hater is horrified by the ending, while Peepers is amused, and he tells the Watchdogs to burn the cartoon, but they tell him that it is being broadcast across the galaxy to everyone's enjoyment. Wander and Sylvia reveal that they have been in the audience and tell Hater they enjoy the cartoon too).
As Hater runs off to destroy the ending, the Watchdogs reveal that there is a twist ending where Hater reveals that he was pretending to like Wander and plans to destroy him. However, Hater cuts off the cartoon before this is shown and attempts to film a new ending where he destroys Wander for good. Being that the broadcast is live, the cartoon's fans rush the studio to celebrate Hater; preventing him from killing Wander. Dominator is revealed to be among the people watching from home and switches the channel out of boredom. She begins to watch The Mystery Kids Mysteries and voices her love of this cartoon over Hater's.
The episode cuts back to the cartoon version of Wander and Sylvia who try to explain what the lesson of the episode was. When they cannot come up with a lesson that ties into the theme of the episode, they settle on telling kids that you should wear a helmet when riding a bike.
Trivia[]
- Hater breaks the fourth wall when he talks about animators.
- When Lord Hater and the Watchdogs are watching the show, they are shown watching in silhouette from a row of theater seats in the lower area of the screen. This is similar to the theater scenes in Mystery Science Theater 3000.
- When Lord Dominator watches "The Mystery Kids Mysteries" (an alien parody of Gravity Falls and Scoob-Doo), Mabel Pines, Dipper Pines, Grunkle Stan, and Soos Ramirez appear in modified forms in this episode.
- The cartoon is a spoof of the 1980s show He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, as well as the animation studio Filmation Associates, known for its limited animation.
