"The Color of Stanley" is the second half of the twenty-third episode in the first season of Stanley.
Summary[]
Stanley tries to fit in with Lionel and the ‘dudes’. After it fails, he learns about chameleons and how they change color, and not just for blending in.
Plot[]
Stanley is looking through his book with Harry, Elsie and Dennis when Lionel comes in with two of his buddies. The three of them dress in purple coats and sunglasses. Stanley becomes interested in this and wants to join in. As the boys begin to jam to music, Stanley begins to dance in his own way. Unfortunately, his attempt to fit in doesn’t work as Lionel tells him to leave.
Stanley is now in his room with his pets, frustrated by the fact that Lionel won’t include him. He then thinks about changing his image to blend in. He takes out a purple shirt with a duck on it out of his dresser, but the others give him a thumbs down. Stanley now feels disappointed until Elsie makes a joke that he can maybe turn purple himself, which gives him an idea. Stanley thinks about becoming a chameleon in order to blend in with the dudes.
So Stanley gets out the Great Big Book of Everything and looks up chameleons. He thinks chameleons can blend in with anything as they please, but Dennis states that’s just the bare facts. So the four all go into the book and end up in the jungle of Madagascar. At first, they don’t see anything until they look up in a tree branch. Dennis states that chameleons tend to move slowly and therefore are safer living in the trees. Afterwards, Stanley decides to become a chameleon himself and runs off into a bush.
The three find Stanley as a chameleon up in a tree, when all of a sudden, a bug begins to fly by. Stanley catches it with his tongue, but starts to become sick after eating it, causing his skin to turn brown. Stanley is confused by this until Dennis explains that chameleons also change color depending on how they feel, which is something out of their control. Soon enough, Stanley begins to change again with his skin having red and blue stripes. Dennis states that chameleons have bright colored stripes when they’re angry. Stanley expresses how angry he is, saying he was thinking about Lionel and the ‘dudes’ and the fact that if he didn’t want to be like them, he wouldn’t be stuck in a tree eating bugs. He then gets angrier, causing his skin to turn black. Stanley says he’s also mad about being wrong about why and how chameleons change colors, and that they can’t change to fit in whenever they want. Dennis states that chameleons can’t hide how they feel any more than Stanley can hide who he is. Harry and Elsie join in and say that he’s lucky to be himself, to take them on crazy adventures, teach them about animals and be their best friend. With that in mind, Stanley feels better and goes back to being a boy.
Back at the house, the boys are about to head out. Before doing so, they all try to hi five in the air at once, but end up falling on the floor. Hoping nobody saw that, they shrug it off and part ways. Afterwards, Lionel finds Stanley in his room, talking with his pets. He thinks that sounds a bit weird, but Stanley isn’t that bothered by it and feels proud of the way he is. Just as Lionel is about to leave, Stanley comments that they should practice their hi five so they don’t fall down next time. Lionel then begins to tickle him nonstop unless he promises not to tell anyone.
