The Creator is a 2023 American science fiction film written, directed, and produced by Gareth Edwards. It was released on September 29, 2023.

Synopsis[]

From writer/director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, Godzilla) comes an epic sci-fi action thriller set amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence. Joshua (Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war
 and mankind itself. Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory
 only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child (Voyles).[1]

Production[]

On February 6, 2020, Variety reported that Gareth Edwards had been hired to direct the film at New Regency.[2]

On May 5, 2021, Deadline reported that John David Washington had been cast in the lead role, with other cast members the following month. The film was originally True Love.[3][4]

On January 17, 2022, The Wrap reported that filming had officially began.[5]

On May 30, 2022, filming officially wrapped.[6]

On July 17, 2023, Edwards confirmed on the film's Twitter account that Hans Zimmer was hired to score the film.[7] On September 19, 2023, Edwards revealed that he initially planned on having a company specializing in AI-generated music replicate Zimmer's style of music. Although the process gave him satisfying results, Edwards instead chose Zimmer to originally score the film.[8] The soundtrack was digitally released by Hollywood Records on September 29, 2023.[9]

The film was released on September 29, 2023. It was set to originally be released on October 6, 2023 before moving up.[10]

  • This is the first film to be shot in 2:76:1 since The Hateful Eight.
    • Thus, this is the first film under Walt Disney Studios not to be released in standard 2.35:1 or 2.39:1 aspect ratio in 2023, followed by Wish.
  • It is the first film to be co-produced between 20th Century Studios/Regency Enterprises and Entertainment One while Walt Disney Pictures only distributed the film.
    • It also marked Entertainment One as the third collaborator for Disney since Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
  • This is the first film to released after the end of the 2023 WGA strike.
