The Small One[]
The Father first appears while he is loading logs on the three young donkeys. Like the three young donkeys, he shoots disapproving looks at his son and Small One when he sees that he’s only putting small sticks on Small One instead of logs. When Small One stumbles because of the sticks, he realizes with sadness why his son is putting sticks on Small One instead of logs: Small One has become old and lost his strength to the point where he can’t carry heavy logs anymore. This is confirmed when the sticks make Small One crash and his son has to carry the sticks Small One dropped when even the sticks prove to be too heavy a load for Small One to carry. After work, he tells his son that Small One needs to be sold. He sees that it hurts his son that he made the decision that Small One needs to be sold for a piece of silver but he knows Small One isn't bringing in any money for the family and there is no need in keeping Small One. He lets his son take Small One and sell him because of how he loves Small One, but makes it clear to the boy that he has to sell the donkey and return home by nightfall.
