Background

Although not meantioned in the movie, in the 1948 and 1952 Golden books, it was revealed that the king was devestaded by his wife's death and spent many years alone before remarrying. When the king did remarry, his new wife although beautiful was not kind. And after his death would treat his daughter unkindly.
Although there was pictures of his first wife, there are no pictures of the king in the golden books, He was only mentioned in the beginning of the story.
Once Upon A Time
In the tv series Once Upon A Time, The king's name is Leopold and is a wise and generous king. He only married Regina because his beloved daughter needed a mother's care as his wife/ Snow's mother died when Snow White was young. He proposes to Regina and Cora accepts. However unbeknowst to Leopold Regina is in love with the stable boy Daniel, Unfortunally for Regina Cora rips Daniel's heart out of his chest and crushes it killing him. Regina agrees and marries the king. Regina is unhappy with her marriage and uses her husband's new friend the Genie to kill him. When the king dies from poisiones snakes, Regina takes over the throne
