The Gogans are the secondary villains from the 1977 film, Pete's Dragon. Lena Gogan, the matriarch, is played by the late Shelley Winters. Her husband, Merle, is played by Charles Tyner. And their sons, Grover and Willie, are played by Gary Morgan and the late Jeff Conaway, respectively.

History

They're Pete's foster family (formerly) (having a bill of sale to prove it (formerly)) but they are abusive to him and hardly treat him like family, so Elliott found and saved him one day and they ran away together. The Gogans go after him during the night while singing The Happiest Home in These Hills as a way of convincing Pete to come back with them and threatening to hurt him. Luckily, they fail to do so when Elliott (invisible) throws them into a mud puddle with one swing of his tail one by one (except Merle who accidentally got thrown in by his idiotic sons). Nevertheless, they just keep looking for Pete because Lena, the matriarch, had paid $50 plus legal for Pete, and had no more of that left. A few days later, they're seen looking for Pete in Passamaquoddy in their horse wagon while asking Hoagy about Pete only to have him deny seeing Pete or his dragon at first. Later, they find Pete with Nora and Lampie on a raft; convincing Nora to give Pete back to them; Bill of Sale, nevertheless, they fail again when Nora and Lampie refuse and finally, Elliott (invisible) dives into the water and swims towards the hillbillies' raft; destroying it in the process and forcing the family to fall into the water. They eventually team up with Doc Terminus and Hoagy to catch Pete and Elliott after falling sick from getting wet. The Gogans bring in a harpoon the Doc ordered from them at sunset in the boat house. After Doc Terminus tricks Pete into thinking that Elliott is in town and tearing the place apart and lures him into the boat house, the Gogans catch him and hold him as bait for a trap set for Elliott. When they see an invisible force holding Hoagy (after Hoagy lures him into the trap) and taking the shape of a dragon after everyone drops nets on him, the Gogans are amazed and terrified. The Gogans and the Doc are both even so the Gogans decide to bag Pete and take him away in their horse wagon. In the end, Elliott, after breaking free from the net trap, saves Pete, burns the Gogans' bill of sale, and scares them while making them fall into a pile of tar from a barrell before having the Gogans give up on Pete. After Elliott scares the Gogans' horse, the Gogans go after him and are never seen again.
