"The Goldfish Problem" is the series premiere of the Disney+ streaming television miniseries Moon Knight and was released on March 30, 2022. It was written by Jeremy Slater and directed by Mohamed Diab.

Synopsis[]

Steven Grant learns that he may be a superhero, but may also share a body with a ruthless mercenary.

Plot[]

Steven Grant is a London based museum gift shop employee who suffers from somnambulism and needs to chain himself when he goes to bed. He lives alone with his single finned goldfish Gus, gets belittled at work by his boss Donna, yet manages to secure a date Friday evening with his coworker Dylan. After going to sleep again, Steven wakes up outside a small village where it is daytime and hears a mysterious voice calling for "Marc" to come back. Soon after, he is chased by gunmen.

Steven runs into the village where everyone there worships a man named Arthur Harrow who apparently has mystical properties capable of saving people while also killing them for a supposed greater good. Harrow weeds out Steven and demands that he give him back a scarab that he supposedly stole. Steven finds that he is incapable of giving it back and gets chased through the streets where he blacks out and in to people having gotten hurt or killed around him. He steals a cupcake truck and flees.

A car chase out of the village takes place with Steven's blackouts causing him to miss out on moments where he apparently attacked and killed more people to defend himself. He suddenly finds himself back in his apartment convinced it was all a dream, only to notice that Gus now has two fins. He takes him back to the fish store to complain and realizes that he is late to meet with Dylan. When she does not arrive, he calls her and discovers that it is Sunday and not Friday and she breaks up with him.

A dejected Steven returns to his apartment and finds that a table had been moved across the floor, he finds a loose wall panel containing keys and a burner phone with calls from someone named "Layla". He calls the number where Layla angrily asks where he has been and refers to him as "Marc", confusing Steven even further. Panicking after hearing more voices, Steven attempts to flee his apartment, only to see the spirit of Khonshu. Another blackout results in Steven awakening on a bus to work with Harrow and his men following him.

Steven is cornered by Harrow and learns that some of the museum employees are also in league with him. Harrow uses his powers on him, only to learn that there is "chaos" inside of him and lets him go; supposedly to fulfill his purpose to him. Steven closes up for the evening, but gets distracted by a dog whimper which turns out to be a large creature that chases him into the restroom. Marc, revealed to be Steven's alternate personality, convinces Steven to let him take control and he transforms into Moon Knight; making short work of the monster, before leaving.
