"The Hard Way" is the second segment of the thirty-first episode of Star vs. the Forces of Evil. It first premiered on February 16, 2017 as a single segment before premiering alongside "Crystal Clear" on February 17.
Synopsis
Ludo forces Glossaryck to teach him about the Book of Spells.
Plot
Ludo arrives at his new temple hideout on Mewni to see his "prisoner" Glossaryck. To his surprise, he is very cordial and carefree and is open to teaching him anything from the spell book that he stole from Star. Ludo asks if his training will be hard and Glossaryck answers if he wants it to be. He has him push the book around and is tired; confusing him as that is what he wanted. Ludo says he does not know what he wants and needs guidance for the first time in his life.
Glossaryck shows Ludo a page for the spell "levitato" and has him try it on an apple. After a couple of failed attempts, Ludo finally manages to get the hang of it. He asks if he is better than Star now to which he admits that he is at least following his directions and reading from the book. Over the course of the day, Ludo practices the spell with he and Glossaryck making progress. Afterwards, Ludo has him tuck him and the wand in bed at night.
Ludo later wakes up in the middle of the night excited and unable to sleep. The wand tells him that Glossaryck is holding back on him about a secret page. Ludo wakes up Glossaryck and demands that he show it to him. As he looks at it, a giant force of dark energy hits him and he is suddenly possessed by Toffee. He tells Glossaryck that he'll never get Ludo on his side, but Glossaryck says he doesn't have a side. In response to this, Toffee laughs and says, "Excellent."
