The Last Duel is a 2021 American-British historical drama film based on the book The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France by Eric Jager. The film is directed by Ridley Scott, from a screenplay written by Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon. Damon stars opposite Adam Driver and Jodie Comer, with Affleck in a supporting role.

It was released on October 15, 2021, by 20th Century Studios, its world premiere at the 2021 Venice Film Festival on September 10, 2021.

Synopsis[]

In 14th century France, best friends Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris are being asked to fight to the death after Carrouges accuses Le Gris of raping his wife, Marguerite. The events leading up to the duel are divided into three chapters, reflecting the perspectives of de Carrouges, Le Gris, and Marguerite, respectively.

Production[]

Filming began on February 14, 2020 in Dordogne, France[1][2][3] and continued on March 12, 2020 in the medieval castle of Berzé-le-Châtel (near Mâcon), Burgundy, France (with a film crew of 300 people including 100 extras).[4][5]

Filming was to have taken place in County Meath, Dublin, County Wicklow and Cahir Castle (in County Tipperary), Ireland from March 23, 2020 to March 30, 2020.[6]

However, on March 13, 2020, Disney announced that the studio had to delay the shoot indefinitely amid concerns for the cast and crew in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic as well as travel restrictions in Europe.[7] Filming resumed in late August, and wrapped on October 14th.[8]

Release[]

The film was originally scheduled to begin a limited theatrical release on December 25, 2020, before going wide on January 8, 2021.[9]

However, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the release date was pushed back to October 15, 2021.[10][11]
