The "Laughing Place" is the name of an implied location from the 1946 Disney film Song of the South.
Background[]
Following Br'er Rabbit being captured by Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear at Chick-A-Pin Hill, the two plan to eat Br'er Rabbit in their lair where they attempt to cook him, but Br'er Rabbit instead ends up feeling ticklish as he starts laughing which reminds him of the "Laughing Place". When Br'er Rabbit takes them there, he tricks the two into the spot which he calls his "laughing place" only to find a patch of bees instead. This ultimately led the two being tricked into a patch of trees revealing a swarm of bees living in it. As a result, this led to the antagonists being chased and stung by the bees while Br'er Rabbit successfully escapes from them, happy to find it his "Laughing Place".
Origins[]
The "Laughing Place" originates from the original Uncle Remus stories by Joel Chandler Harris centering on Br'er Rabbit, Br'er Fox, and Br'er Bear respectively. In the original story, Br'er Rabbit leads Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear to the area which he calls his "laughing place". Out of curiosity, the two allowed Br'er Rabbit to lead the way only for the latter to walk into a cavern of bees. This resulted in Br'er Rabbit tricking Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear into their comeuppance, resulting the two to be attacked, stung, and chased by angry bees who give him payback while Br'er Rabbit successfully escaped.
Yet in Song of the South, this place was depicted as a small patch of trees where Br'er Rabbit tricked Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear into a patch of trees revealing an active beehive with bees in it.
Appearances[]
Song of the South[]
When Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear attempt to eat Br'er Rabbit at Chick-A-Pin Hill, they attempt to roast Br'er Rabbit into fire, but ended up laughing instead, which reminds him of the "Laughing Place", disrupting Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear's meal just as he continuously laughs while attempting to escape from the two. Later, Br'er Rabbit sings the musical number "Everybody's Got a Laughing Place" just as the two take him to the place where the "Laughing Place" is supposed to be at, much to Br'er Fox telling Br'er Bear that Br'er Rabbit is attempting to make a fool of himself. As the three stop, Br'er Rabbit leads the two into the "Laughing Place" where Br'er Bear enters only to find bees instead. This led to Br'er Rabbit tricking the two into the patch of trees where the bees are at just as the bees attack the duo. All of a sudden, the bees attack Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear, stinging them and chasing them away while Br'er Rabbit miraculously laughs at them being foiled while throwing autumn leaves in the air, happy that he found his "Laughing Place".
Disney Parks[]
Splash Mountain[]
In every version of Splash Mountain, the "Laughing Place" sequence takes place during the part where the logs drop down into a cavern full of bees (reflecting the part of what was seen in the original Uncle Remus stories). As the guests arrive at the area, bees are seen buzzing and singing happily to the song "Everybody's Got a Laughing Place" just before the vehicle arrives for guests to encounter various animals happily singing the same song in a place known as "Rainbow Hollow". Throughout the sequence, Br'er Rabbit ends up getting captured by Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear placing a beehive on him and then trapping him in Chick-A-Pin Hill, just as Br'er Rabbit is captured. All of a sudden, Br'er Rabbit manages to escape from the two, resulting in Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear being caught by Br'er Gator.
