The Merry Dwarfs are the titular characters from the 1929 Silly Symphony animated short.
Background[]
The Merry Dwarfs consist of several identical dwarfs each having the same appearance. Each dwarf has an identical appearance as in wearing Dutch hats, as well as having long beards resembling that of Rip Van Winkle. They are also capable of having several occupations such as blacksmiths, streetcleaners, or musicians throughout the village inhabited by dwarfs.
Appearances[]
The Merry Dwarfs[]
The Merry Dwarfs are first seen dancing lively across their village during their business routines. One dwarf uses a broom which he sweeps it rhythmically and later uses his own beard as a broom during his duty as a janitor, followed by another dwarf using a centipede drumming on his legs as an instrument, which he happily plays with it, followed by two more dwarfs hammering horseshoes in the smithy, and another one putting a horseshoe on a grasshopper, causing him to feel comfortable and kick him into the smithy.
More dwarfs march across the village in the form of a parade while the bandleader rhythmically twirls his baton. Another dwarf happily rides on a grasshopper hauling a barrel of beer with another one standing on a loose rolling barrel, while more dwarfs parade across the village, followed by other dwarfs dancing with mugs of beer. After drinking their glasses, the dwarfs continue dancing together in rhythm in a merry personality in the form of a gavotte, just as they dance around the flower. They later dance in a serious manner together in rhythm while walking across the garden and later in a spontaneous manner across the village, just as they continue dancing together.
Later, a leaf falls onto one of the dwarfs, which he mistakes it for a tutu just as he dances while wearing it only for him to dislodge it, causing his hat to be squeezed over his body, making his feet only visible. However, another dwarf manages to restore him to his normal size, just before the two continue dancing with each other. Later, the two dwarfs then land onto an open beer barrel, just as they dance in a drunken state and later smash the barrel on a tree. The two dwarfs continue dancing within that state just before the short ends.
Other appearances[]
In Who Framed Roger Rabbit, four Merry Dwarfs briefly appear during the "Smile Darn Ya Smile" sequence during the part where Eddie drives across Toontown. They retain their original black-and-white appearance in the titular short, unlike most Toons who have a colored appearance. The Dwarfs are briefly seen dancing in sync with the Reluctant Dragon behind them just before Jiminy Cricket appears above them, as the Dwarfs move left and continue dancing.
