"The Party" is the thirteenth episode of The Proud Family.
Synopsis[]
The episode starts with Penny giving a presentation to her family (with the help of Sticky) called "Penny's Blues", in hopes that she would be able to throw her own house party. Though she is allowed to have one, her idea of having fun is different compared to her family's, in which she did not invite them. Meanwhile, she hands invitations to some of the students in her school. However, everything goes awry when LaCienega shows up, and (having secretly heard from Dijonay about Penny's party) throws a party of her own the same day as Penny's. Though LaCienega's party attracts more students, the rest of Penny's friends promise to attend. Later on, while Penny's parents are setting the party up, Dijonay, Sticky, and Zoey show up outside of Penny's house, asking if it's okay to park in her drive way, which Penny agrees with. Little did she know, they were actually bailing on her, and attended to LaCienega's party instead.
As Penny lays crying on the couch, Suga Mama returns from having been to LaCienega's party as well behind Penny's back. Trudy assures her that her friends will be back. Right on cue, the doorbell rings, only revealing to be Myron. He stated that the people in LaCienega wouldn't let him attend that party, and that Dijonay advised him to go to Penny's as she was "desperate and will take anybody." Infuriating her even more, the Gross Sisters were next to attend the party. They stated that they got invitations that everyone in school threw out in the trash, which saddens Penny even more, leaving her to cry in her room alone. Trudy, however, tells Penny that she wanted to have this party, and that she is going to have it, even if it's not with the people she expected. Speaking of unexpected, Lou Rawls also attends the party, while being accompanied with Suga Mama. Everyone plays a couple of games, except for Penny who refuses to participate. But Lou Rawls shows her that her family cares about her (and even the people who attended the party respect her enough that they decided to show up). Penny apologizes for her rude behavior earlier, and Suga Mama says they'll forgive her if she plays another game with them, to which she agrees.
Later that same night, the doorbell rings, and Penny opens the door to find Dijonay, Zoey, and Sticky in her front porch. They attended last minute, only because LaCienega's party wasn't as thrilling and exciting as it was supposed to be. Penny slams the door on them at first, but opens it up only because Trudy thinks it would make her feel even better. She even goes so far to let LaCienega to join the party too.
Trivia[]
- Moral: As Lou Rawls points out, things aren't going to go right in life all the time, and people you think are your friends will disappoint you. What matters is how you treat the people who always have your back.
- Lou Rawls sings his trademark song "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" in this episode. Rawls actually rerecorded the song just for this episode, the only time this occurs in the series. In future episodes, whenever a musical celebrity voices themselves, they don't sing, the original recording of their songs are used instead.
- Suga Mama calls Myron "Urkel", a reference to Jo Marie Payton's career on Family Matters, where she called Steve Urkel by his last name.
- It is revealed that Olay and Gina can sing in deep voices.
- At one point in the episode, recycled animation from "Don't Leave Home Without It" was used when Oscar told Penny that he's cool compared to Trudy and Suga Mama. This can be noticed by the brief difference in animation style.
- Suga Mama’s Roof is on Fire dance, is a call back to the 1990 Movie, House Party, featuring Kid n Play.
