"The Ratings Game" is the second segment of the thirty-fourth episode of Recess.
Synopsis[]
The Ashleys instigate a ratings system to crush the self-esteem of the kids on the playground, leading to chaos.
Plot[]
The Ashleys unexpectedly give all the students of Third Street School envelopes. At recess, they unveil their plan to put people in groups based on what they perceive to be their place. Upon opening the envelopes, T.J. learns he is a 5, the middle most rating, Spinelli is a 4, Vince is a 9, Gretchen is an 8, Mikey is a 1, and Gus is a 0. T.J. is turned away by Lawson who refuses to play with him as he is a 6. Vince learns that his group is composed of people who are the best at something, though he fails to connect with any of them. Gretchen learns that her group is full of tall skinny girls, who do not share her intellect, and Gus has no one to talk to. T.J. tries to get King Bob to do something about the ratings, but he refuses to talk to anyone below 7 and the Ashleys continue to demote T.J.'s number.
Eventually, T.J. tries to spread his message of throwing away their numbers, but only his friends back him up and they are all demoted to -3 while everyone continues to follow the Ashleys' ratings. The Recess Gang finally get fed up and start printing out 10s for everyone and passes them around, including giving one to Randall who was a lowly 1. The Ashleys realize that their experiment is backfiring on them and finally give up on their rating system. Everyone now feels like a 10, except for King Bob who combined the Ashleys' number and T.J.'s number and considers himself a 20.
