"The Rules" is the second segment of the forty-first episode of Recess.
Synopsis[]
The old King Morty's rules are reinstated after Vince and Lawson have a disagreement regarding a kickball landing in a dumpster.
Plot[]
While playing kickball, Vince kicks the ball into a dumpster. Vince and Lawson get into an argument about whether or not it counts and go to King Bob. King Bob does not have an answer and asks that the Jordan and Jerome look through the library. They come across King Morty's rule book from 1935 and reveal that the kid who kicks it has to go into the dumpster and pull out an apple. Both kids must throw the apple back and forth until the loser drops it, determining who is in the right. Vince wins and everyone agrees.
With everyone in agreement, King Bob returns to dictate his life while the kids follow King Morty's rules. At first, everyone is having fun, until they come to the realization that none of the rules make sense as they ask for them to use cheaper or non-playable versions of objects that they typically use. Gretchen comes to the conclusion that because the rule book was written during the Great Depression, the kids did not have access to the things they have now and everyone insists on reverting to the current rules, but Jordan and Jerome force the kids to play by King Morty's rules.
The kids all manage to sneak away into the hidden area of the playground so that they can resume their usual play, but Jordan, Jerome and the rest of King Bob's guard find them and proceed to go to war with them. King Bob finally returns and listens to what has happened; being especially confused that they had kids playing with stumps. T.J. explains that King Morty's rules do not make any sense and King Bob concurs, repealing King Morty's rules, adding a new rule in the process that if a rule does not make any sense or is outdated, a new rule will be implemented to accommodate for the changing times. T.J. points out that if King Bob is too busy reciting his life story on his throne, how would he know if a new rule is working or not. When asked if he had a suggestion, T.J. challenges him to play an good old game of kickball. King Bob then ends off that if a ball is kicked into a dumpster again, they settle it over a coin toss.
