The Rutabaga Rag is a ragtime-style song performed by Ludwig Von Drake and the first song of the 1962 animated featurette A Symposium on Popular Songs.
Background
During the song, a variety of stop-motion animated vegetables with faces appear and dance to the song.
Lyrics
Everybody's
Ragging to the rutabaga, ragging to the rutabaga,
'Cause they know it's
Hotter than a hot potato, hotter than a hot potato.
It's got a new beat,
It's called a two-beat.
Radishes and onions
Are getting corns and bunions,
Ragging to the Rutabaga Rag!
Brussel sprouts are
Wearing out their new galoshes,
Dancing with the summer squashes.
Lettuce do it,
And asparagus and limas,
They're becoming real ragtimers.
By the numbers,
Broccoli and celery and cool cucumbers,
Love the little syncopator,
Lift you like an elevator,
Red hot Rutabaga Rag!
(instrumental)
Brussel sprouts are
Wearing out their new galoshes,
Dancing with the summer squashes.
Lettuce do it,
And asparagus and limas,
They're becoming real ragtimers.
By the numbers,
Broccoli and celery and cool cucumbers,
Love the little syncopator,
Lift you like an elevator,
Red hot Rutabaga...
Red hot Rutabaga...
Red hot Rutabaga Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag!
That's all!
Trivia
- The song was also performed by Jo Anne Worley in the Mouse Factory episode "Women's Lib".
- A version with Paul Frees' voice unprocessed (i.e. not sped up for Ludwig's voice) is included on the Disneyland Records album Tinpanorama.
