"The Shiner" is the first segment of the thirty-first episode of Recess.
Synopsis[]
T.J. comes in to school with a black eye and lies, saying that he got it for doing something heroic.
Plot[]
T.J. is dropped off at school where his friends are surprised to see that he has a blackeye, or a shiner, but he refuses to explain how he got it. They immediately guess that he had done something heroic when he got it and is simply embarrassed or too humble to say what. Randall overhears and spreads the word with all the kids asking T.J. if the various stories spread about him are true. T.J. tries to dissuade everyone from further conversation, but even Miss Grotke and the lunch ladies also commend him and he is given offerings, including baked cookies from the bully Gelman who has respect for him. T.J. decides to play along and receive praise.
Throughout the day, T.J. is continuously hailed a hero when King Bob arrives and tells everyone that they will be holding a procession for him. He is given more gifts including a corn chip from Cornchip Girl in the shape of Abe Lincoln. When asked to tell the story of how he got it, T.J. is convinced by the Abe Lincoln chip to tell the truth as the lies will catch up to him eventually. T.J. breaks down and reveals that he got his blackeye not from doing anything heroic, but from attending a square dancing youth group over the weekend and bumping into a larger girl. Everyone proceeds to laugh and find the story amusing nonetheless. T.J. is still hailed a hero for being honest over such an embarrassing story.
