"The Velvet Room" is the thirty-third episode of Pepper Ann. It aired on February 10, 2000.

Synopsis[]

Pepper Ann's mother, Lydia, decorates one room in her house into a "velvet room" (a room that's only used for special occasions), but when she overdoes it on redecorating the house, Pepper Ann runs away—and finds that her friends' parents have similar velvet rooms.

Plot[]

After Pepper Ann beats Milo at Conquest, she excitedly hops on the couch, only to damage it. Lydia is upset, but later explains that she got a call from her friend Marion Cornwalis, who is the host of a show called This Gorgeous House, and that she is coming to visit her. Marion arrives and she and Lydia catch up. Impressed with her simplistic home, Marion decides to do a piece on her. Meanwhile, Pepper Ann is at Milo's house where she mentions the show. Milo then shows off his family's velvet room, a room for "special occasions", but in actuality is never used for anything. Pepper Ann thinks it is dumb and returns home.

Lydia has started taking out her old furniture and appliances and has started replacing them with more fancy, yet unusable furniture and items. Pepper Ann is annoyed at these, especially when Lydia hires Tadius to come and make even more changes. After Pepper Ann's room is changed while she is sleeping, she angrily leaves and decides to go hang out with Milo again. Not wanting to play Conquest again, Pepper Ann takes up Milo's offer on playing indoor sports instead. However, Pepper Ann accidentally lands one foot into the velvet room. True to Milo's fear, his mother Kona picks up a scent as if something is off.

Kona is angry to find a footprint in the velvet room and Milo tells Pepper Ann to run to Nicky's. While there, Pepper Ann decides to help set up the table, but ends up using the good China. Embarrassed, Pepper Ann heads to Dieter's, but gets kicked out when she plays their family organ. At Tessa and Vanessa's, she steps on the grass and at Gwen's she plays in their basketball court, all ending with being scolded for not being a special occasion. Pepper Ann finally runs into Vera who invites her inside her cat laden house. She tells her that everything she owns were saved for "special occasions", but they never came and so they have all gone to waste.

Pepper Ann returns home to see that Lydia is giving a tour of her house to the parents she had previously offended. Lydia tells Pepper Ann that she is thinking of keeping the furniture and has Tadius force Pepper Ann and Moose in horrible clothes. Pepper Ann finally snaps at all the adults for wasting away with their "velvet rooms". Marion arrives and agrees with Pepper Ann, adding that she likes Lydia's house because it was "real". All the adults agree and leave in shame, and Lydia changes things back to what they were. As Lydia summarizes what she learned, all the families become more lax with their "velvet rooms" and Vera's "special occasion" finally arrives as Billy Goat McGraw and they sing together.

Trivia[]

  • This episode marks the first of a few things:
  • Going by production order, this is the first (and only speaking) appearance of Kona Kamalani, Milo's mother, although she had been mentioned in previous episodes.
    • Going by broadcast order, "A Kosher Christmas" would've been her first appearance.
    • This also marks the only appearances of Gwen Mezzrow and Tessa and Vanessa James's fathers, although Mr. James was mentioned in a previous episode.
  • This is also the first time we see Vera's house and all her cats.
