"The Voice" is the first segment of the twelfth episode of Recess.
Synopsis[]
Mikey is discovered to have a powerful singing voice and gets paired up with a music teacher to perfect it for the school concert.
Plot[]
The entire school is subjected to listen to Brandon the Singer perform the National Anthem, but the performance is immediately ended after he accidentally swallows a bee. Principal Prickly and Miss Finster struggle to figure out what to do until they hear a magnificent voice coming from the bathroom and discover that it came from Mikey. They try and get him to sing again, but he claims that he is terrible and when he tries to replicate the singing, he is off key. Prickly suggests hiring a middle school music teacher by the name of Miss Salamone who he says can get any kid to sing perfectly.
Mikey is dreading the teacher's arrival until he meets Miss Salamone who is a young, kind and attractive woman. She immediately learns that Mikey only sings well when he is in the bathroom and replicates this, whereupon everybody at recess hears his voice for the first time. Miss Salamone slowly begins to remove the bathroom elements and Mikey is capable of singing well without it. When he reunites with the Recess Gang, he admits that not only does he like training with Miss Salamone, but that he is in love with her, shocking the Gang. They try to convince him that she is not in love with her and he rushes to prove it, only to see Miss Salamone accept a wedding proposal from her boyfriend Antonio.
On the day of the concert that is to be held at the school with the Superintendent, no one can find Mikey. Miss Salamone finds him in the bathroom and she realizes that he is in love with her. She tells him that she is too old for him and that only he can decide whether he wants to sing or not, but only for himself. Mikey finally comes to grips with his situation and goes out, but instead of singing the National Anthem like what Prickly wanted, he decides to sing "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen". After the song, everybody cheers and gives Mikey a standing ovation and he tearfully says goodbye to Miss Salamone who in turn tells him that she will see him in middle school.
