"Them's the Breaks, Kid" is the thirty-fourth episode of the Disney Channel animated series The Owl House. It premiered on April 16, 2022, and is the fifteenth episode in the second season.

Synopsis[]

Eda tells a story from her teen years: the day she met Raine Whispers.

Plot[]

Still missing her mother, Luz keeps herself busy by trying out a number of unfinished glyph combos from Philip's diary, hoping one of them may help her create a portal back home. Her experiments have both been successful and unsuccessful. Eda encourages Luz to stop thinking about Philip, but Luz instead curls up on the ground and pulls up her hoodie, admitting that she misses her mother. To cheer her up, Eda offers to tell her the story of how she met Raine Whispers.

Going back to when Eda and Lilith were teenagers, Eda and Raine's first meeting first began when both Eda and Lilith showed up late for school. Eda managed to sneak her sister in, but she got herself caught by the former ruthless Principal Faust. Because of all her mischief and mayhem, Principal Faust threatens to have her expelled and never fulfill her dream to join the Emperor's Coven alongside Lilith. However, Eda manages to convince the principal to give her a chance, which he does. Every year, Hexside participates in a special training program called Instructing Future Witches of Tomorrow (aka IFWOT). Principal Faust attends with Hexside's most gifted students and return with blue ribbons. Unfortunately, Principal Faust had all his top students expelled for chewing too loudly in the cafeteria. So he sends Eda to represent the school, and promises to let her stay if she comes back with a blue ribbon. He also sends Vice Principal Bump to accompany her, and threatens to fire him if she fails.

Eda and Bump arrive at the Covention Center the next day, and find the IFWOT event to be not as exciting as they thought. Even the host, Terra Snapdragon, is not impressed. She even changes the name to "Help Enhance Coven Know-how" (aka HECK). During this event, young witches go through a series of exercises that will test their intelligence, strength, and creativity. Only the best of the best will be rewarded with blue ribbons at the end of the day. Eda is no really into this event, and does not even try. After pulling a prank during one of the exercises, she sits by herself with a drink, regretting her decision to come. That is when she meets Raine Whispers, and two quickly become friends, especially after Raine fixes the disgusting taste of her drink using magic soundwaves. Raine has won two ribbons at the event and tends on winning their third this year. Raine offers to help Eda win her own ribbon, and she immediately accepts.

Throughout the event, Eda and Raine work together to successfully pass all the exercises while getting to know each more. Eda learns that Raine goes to St. Epiderm, which is not cheap, and is at the event for the third time is because the school will give them a scholarship if they make the school look good. Eda shares her reasons for being at the event with Raine as well. She tells them about how Principal Faust threatened to expel her if she did not come back with a ribbon. She never wanted to come, but she came for the sake of staying in school beside her sister.

As the end of the HECK event draws near, all the young witches gather in arena to receive their rewards. But to everyone's shock, Terra Snapdragon decides to not give anyone any ribbons because she found the whole event a disappointment. To her, there was nothing challenging about any of the challenges. So, to make herself feel better, she decides to bring up one more challenge. She traps all the young witches inside a hedge maze and have them hunt each other down in a game of Covens vs Wilds. Witches who are wearing Coven badges have twenty minutes to capture all witches who are wearing Wild badges, and if they succeed everyone on their team will get a ribbon. Witches wearing Wild badges may earn their badges if they put on a good show for Terra. And to make it more interesting, she allows them to use any kinds of magic.

The challenge begins, and all the young witches start chasing and attacking each other. Eda and Raine end up on opposing sides. Eda is on the Coven team while Raine is on the Wild team. Eda runs through the maze, dodging and deflecting attacks from other witches, doing her very best not to get caught. Pretty soon, all the witches wearing Wild badges are captured and Raine is the only one remaining. Two Coven badge witches corner them, only for Eda to step in their way. Thinking the two will face each other head on, Terra takes down the maze to give them more room. Eda and Raine charge at each other, but instead of attacking they cast a fire blast spell together at Terra, both fed up with her stupid challenge. Eda and Raine expect a scolding from the head witch of the Plant Coven, but instead she praises them for their performance. To her, feisty witches make the best leaders. But because of their disobedience, she does not reward them any ribbons, which goes for everyone else. However, Terra will assures Eda she will have a word with Principle Faust to insure she gets to stay in school, which in effect will allow Bump to keep his job.

A few days later, Eda returns to school and joins Lilith for lunch, who is busy studying. She tells her about her weekend, Lilith is too busy to listen and leaves the cafeteria. Then, to her surprise, Raine shows up as a Hexside student. Apparently, they transferred out of Epiderm since their parents hate the cold weather on the Knee. From that day forth, Eda and Raine became inseparable.

Evening falls by the time Eda finishes her story, and Luz, King, and Hooty have fallen asleep. Eda gazes at the evening sky and thinks about Raine. at the Emperor's Castle, Terra continues to give Raine her special tea that represses their memory of their actions against the Emperor. Little does she know that Raine has been secretly disenchanting her tea with soundwave magic, keeping their memories intact. By this time, Raine learns about Belos' plans to cast a draining spell and apparently the only way to stop it is Eda. However, Raine refuses to put Eda in anymore danger. They are determined to find another way to stop Belos.

Trivia[]

  • It is revealed that Raine's memory loss and remaining loyal to the Emperor is an act, and has been using a whistling spell to disenchant Terra's tea.
  • Four new glyph combos are revealed.
  • This episode reveals that Bump used to be the vice principal, with the previous principal being a demonic being named Faust. His name is a reference to the famous German story of the same name about a man who sells his soul to the devil, specifically his representative Mephistopheles, for knowledge and power. This is referenced within the episode when Eda explains that they "made a deal with the devil".
  • The intro gets cut short again.
  • This backstory part of the episode is set seven months before Eda gets cursed.
  • Young Eda quotes the same line from "Something Ventured, Someone Framed", "I thought there be more."
  • It is revealed that on the Day of Unity, Belos plans to cast a draining spell by using people from the 9 covens around a tower.
    • Apparently, the only one who can stop this is Eda as Raine is informed about this.
  • At the end it is hinted that Darius is working with Raine to try and stop whatever Belos is doing because the little Abomination has his 'hair style'.
  • Like Avi Roque who provides the voice of Raine Whispers, Blu del Barrio, who voices the younger version of the character, is also non-binary.
  • At the end of the flashback, it is shown that it was Raine who gave Eda her first box of apple blood.
  • The hidden code is found under one of the leaves of Terra's plant platform. When translated, it says "Darkened".

Goofs[]

  • Cissy Jones is credited for voicing Lilith, despite Lilith only being present as her teen self voiced by Abigail Zoe Lewis.
