Third Street School is a school on third street in an unknown town. It is the main setting for the television show, Recess.
Description[]
The school is named after both the street itself and the streets' namesake, Thaddeus T. Third III.
Perhaps the most notable features of Third Street School are the ever present clock on the back of the main building; the playground and particularly Old Rusty, the jungle gym on which much of the story depends. Third Street School is also unique; There are many secrets hidden inside and outside the walls. Its first class was held in 1921 and graduated in 1928.
In 1935, the kids of the playground would elect a succession of Kings to lord over the kids during recess, with the requirement being that he must be in the 6th Grade. Each King would make use of a jungle gym to act as his castle. The first King was "King Morty", who would write a series of rules regarding the rationing of resources, mostly balls. At some point after his reign, King Freddy I would reign the playground.
Over many school seasons, the school would be home to a pet hamster named Speedy, who would upon passing be replaced by an identically named and similar looking hamster, serving as the class pet throughout WWII and beyond.
In 1953, Peter Prickly would begin attending classes at Third Street School as a kindergartender alongside Muriel Finster and future mayor Phillip Fitzhugh. On June 15th, 1958, Prickly and a few of his fellow fourth graders would bury a treasure on the playground, hiding the map in an old history book.
In 1968, Prickly, Finster, and Phillium Benedict, newly graduated from teaching school, were hired as the faculty for the 1968-69 school year. Benedict was appointed as the youngest principal in the school's history. His first action was to remove recess from the school scheduling, in order to advance the school's test score ratings. The parents of the students broke into protest to bring back recess, a matter brought to the district superintendent. After being told of this situation, the superintendent vetoed Benedict's decision and fired him, replacing his position as principal with Prickly, a position he would hold for the next 30 years. Finster would also be praised for her new teaching methods.
In the 1980's, Franklin Dudikoff would be elected as the King of the Playground before the mantle would eventually pass to King Al. Al reigned from 1991-1992 before passing it onto Wally. King Wally would later pass it onto King Chuck, and from him to Sid. King Sid would pass his crown onto King Bob, who would reign the 1997-1998 school year. On the final day of school, King Bob would make his final act to name his successor King Freddie II. Bob would briefly return to his kingly mantle to lead the former 6th graders in the student body's defense of the school against Phillium Benedict's goons.
