Thor: Love and Thunder is a 2022 Marvel film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a sequel to Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame. It is the fourth movie centered around Thor Odinson, the Marvel Comics character created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Larry Lieber, which in turn is based on the Thor character from Norse Mythology. It was released on July 8, 2022. It is the twenty-ninth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the sixth of Phase Four.

Synopsis[]

The film finds Thor on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced — a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher, who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg, and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who — to Thor’s surprise — inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor.

Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher's vengeance and stop him before it's too late.[1]

Plot[]

Thor parts ways with the Guardians of the Galaxy after receiving a distress signal from Sif. Upon arrival, a beaten Sif warns Thor of Gorr the God Butcher, a being possessing the god-killing weapon, the Necrosword, seeking the extinction of all gods as revenge for ignoring the death of his family and that his next target is New Asgard.

Dr. Jane Foster, Thor's ex-girlfriend, arrives at New Asgard in hopes of seeking medical treatment for her cancer. When Gorr attacks New Asgard, Thor's old hammer Mjolnir reforges and bonds itself to Foster after sensing her worthiness - granting her the power of Thor. Thor eventually arrives in New Asgard and is surprised to find Foster with Mjolnir. Thor teams up with Valkyrie, Korg, and Foster to fight Gorr and his symbiote creatures. The group is able to thwart Gorr, but he escapes, kidnapping several Asgardian children.

The group travels to Omnipotent City to warn the other gods and ask for their help. The Olympian god Zeus is unwilling to help and has Thor captured, forcing the group to fight off Zeus's men. Zeus injures Korg; in anger, Thor impales Zeus with his own thunderbolt, which Valkyrie steals during their escape. They then travel to the Shadow Realm to save the children. However, this turned out to be a ruse for Gorr to take Stormbreaker, which he intends to use on the Bifrost to enter Eternity and ask for the destruction of all gods. Gorr manages to overpower Thor's group and successfully steal Stormbreaker. Gorr uses Stormbreaker to open the portal to Eternity. With Valkyrie and Foster injured, Thor imbues the kidnapped Asgardian children and their weapons with the power of Thor to fight alongside him. Foster joins Thor in fighting Gorr and destroys the Necrosword.

Admitting defeat, Thor manages to convince Gorr that all he wanted from Eternity was not to destroy the gods but to get his daughter Love back. Foster succumbs to her illness and dies in Thor's arms. Eternity allows Gorr's request to revive Love, whom he asks Thor to take care of before he dies from the effects of the Necrosword. The children return to New Asgard, where Valkyrie and Sif begin training them. Meanwhile, Thor, now in possession of Mjolnir again, continues to go on adventures to help people, with Love, now wielding Stormbreaker, by his side.

In a mid-credits scene, the injured Zeus sends his son Hercules to kill Thor. In a post-credits scene, Foster arrives at the gates of Valhalla, where Heimdall welcomes her.

Trivia[]

  • Since Knull appears in the Sonyverse movie Venom: The Last Dance, he is removed from Gorr's backstory in this movie.
  • This marks the first Thor film to not feature Loki physically. However, a tattoo featuring the God of Mischief can be seen in Thor's back after Zeus leaves him naked with his flick.
  • Chris Hemsworth confirmed in an interview that this won't be his last appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as he will continue to play Thor beyond this film.[9][10]
  • According to Tessa Thompson, in this film, Valkyrie would be looking for a queen,[11] but this ended up not happening.
  • Chris Hemsworth's son (Tristan Hemsworth) plays a young Thor while Hemsworth's daughter (India Rose Hemsworth) plays Love, the adoptive daughter of Thor.
  • At the start of the trailer, teenage Thor is seen in his outfit from the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby comics.
  • This is the first MCU film to incorporate the StageCraft technology.
  • On Thor's boat that flies, there is a purple sign that reads "Cocktails & Dreams". The same sign was used in Tom Cruise's film Cocktails.
  • The runtime is reportedly 119 minutes (1 hour 59 minutes) making it the shortest MCU film since 2018.[12]
  • The film was not released in Malaysia,[13] Brunei,[14] Kuwait,[15] Bahrain,[16] Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Oman, Qatar,[17] and Jordan[18] due to LGBT elements not being cut from the film.
  • When the film's final trailer was screened theatrically in front of Disney/Pixar's Lightyear, the word "damn" and the blurred nude scene were both removed, due to language and inappropriate content.
  • This the first movie to feature Jane Foster since Thor: The Dark World (not counting her brief cameo in Avengers: Endgame).
  • This is the second Thor film to feature a relative of Chris Hemsworth, after his brother Luke Hemsworth appearing in Thor: Ragnarok, as a Thor actor.
