  • 1) Quite simply they were off on another mission, which is not far fetch'd if you think about it. I mean, its like the Avengers, of which this show is partly inspired by: If the Avengers were responsible for helping out EVERY "big problem", then what would be the point of every other superhero existing in Marvel like the X-men, Spider-Man, SHIELD itself etc.? They specifically can't always help out EVERY problem of course. Besides, the Pride Lands and Africa itself is a HUGE place so they could have just been busy with something else.

    2) Possibly, because of Kion's friendship with hyena Jasiri, of which Simba does not currently know about. Maybe its a scenario where when Kion got older there was a misunderstanding with that Jasiri could have done something and Kion had an argument with Simba over it, and Kion just ran away with her because "we are the same", which would further motivate Kiara to prove Kovu's innocence and her independence when she got older

    3) Very possibly, like with Simba and Nala's original son Kopa in the Lion King books, Kion went off to form his own Pride, or even Lion Guard somewhere else outside the Pride Lands. Like I said, Africa is a huge continent after all, and the series is said to be set in Kenya, so Kion and the Lion Guard could have moved to another part of Africa. There is also a chance that Bunga could have persuaded them all to "Hakuna Matata" it all when they got older, like his uncles

As you can see, its pretty much common sense as to how it can still tie into the series. They were able to make Megara appear on an episode of Hercules: The Animated Series, which is a midquel series like this and they were still able to make it work without ruining the continuity, so they could find a way to make it work here. As Kovu and the Outsiders are going to appear on the show, it is likely that they will find a way to tie it all in together, perhaps by the series finale if nothing else.

    • I think that Kion went off with the Lion Guard during the second film to find new lions for the Pridelands, and came back with the new lions after the film ended. The new lions and the Outsiders end up mating and producing the Lion Guard of the next generation.

    • After watching Lion King 2 again, I'm starting to wonder if Kion died prior to the film.

Kion was not mentioned at all throughout the movie (obviously because it's 18 years prior Lion Guard) but if Lion Guard is indeed "canon" and part of Lion King lore, then you'd think Kion would be much more involved, such as Lion Guard duty stopping the fire. He was no even present at the ending where Simba and Kovu were the only lion-guys throughout the movie. (Though absent of male lions could be Kion started a new, more traidional Lion Guard and had to take them all out of Africa... for some reason.)

Buuuuut given it's a Disney Junior TV series, I doubt the explanation episode will be the last ending in death. So it could be that the Lion Guard were elsewhere outside the Pridelands throughout the movie, perhaps outside of Africa entirely. While it seems unlikely, I really do hope there will be an "Explanation episode" or special someday to tie in Lion Guard with Lion King 2.

On a side note, I think Nuka would make an interesting Lion Guard villain if the series decide to replace Janja. I can imagine his attempts to stop the Lion Guards is all for his mothers approval.

    • Theory #1: Kion slowly gets sucked into the dark side until one fateful day when he uses the roar and is stripped of the power. Horrified of what he's become, he leaves the Pridelands to avoid harming anyone again. Everyone vows never to mention Kion. However, his friends go off to find him, convinced there is still good in him. They ultimately return to the Pridelands.

Theory #2: With the Pridelands safe, The Lion Guard ventures off to spread justice to other parts of Africa. They return one day to discover Kovu has been accepted into the pride. Kovu and Kiara have two cubs, the younger one eventually being given the power of the roar with Kion as his mentor. And thus begins the next generation's Lion Guard.

    • Now you listen to me, as long as I'm around, you're not welcomed in the Pridelands, or the Outlands!
      Kion to Zira.

Todays episode opens up some new cues to the whole Lion Guard-Simba's Pride connections. And while I did rebutted Kions possible demise before Simba's Pride due to Disney Jr. being kid friendly, it could be possible the Outlanders got rid of the Lion Guard not long before Zira began her schemes.

    • Kion and Bunga should of been seen in The Lion King 2 Simba's Pride.

    • Maybe we'll eventually find out why the Guard didn't appear in Simba's Pride. Probably around the grand finale.

I hope so or the only closure we'll get is from dark fanfiction stories that have their own version of what happened to them

    • The Christmas special of the show already proves that The Lion Guard is non-canon.

    • I do find it wierd that animals have a concept of Christmas. Maybe if it was going by Timon & Pumbaa series logic which was more of a comedy and occaisonally had humans.

The very least I would of figured the Lion King be more for Kwanzaa. Yeah I know Christmas has been around Africa since 1910 but Kwanzaa was made as an alternative winter holiday for Pan-Africanism. Maybe have Maulana Karenga voice a role to teach more about Kwanzaa.

Still, I figured Kupatana was at least their equivilent to Christmas.

Actually The Christmas Special did nothing to step on existing continuity. This Dandy Claus Timon and Pumbaa were speaking of never showed up. That could be taken as saying that he is not real. It also kept any Human involvement out of The Lion King Universe.

The fact that Kupatana is mentioned in the episode is to let viewers know that Christmas is not replacing Kupatana as A Pride Lands holiday.

Continuity-wise all the episode did was establish Christmas as A Pride Lands holiday.

I think it fits in just fine to be accepted into continuity. Because I seriously doubt Christmas will be mentioned again outside of another Christmas special.

    • I actually made a theory suggesting how both TLG and The Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa fit into the franchise canon. read it here

      Neat Theory.

    • I think the answer is simple. Kion is not canon.

The Lion Guard is a TV series, and thus a separate entity from the films.

Kion is debuted as a television character, rather than a film character, so he is in an alternate storyline, apart from the movie universe in which Simba had one cub; Kiara.

    • FluffyLioness1994, I think Ford Riley is trying to keep its promise. He did say Season 3 will explain where he was in the Lion King 2

    • I'm glad an explanation and loose tie-in to LK2 was finally implimented in the season.

Though on the matter of Scar, was he evil by nature or would he have been good if he had never met that other lion?

        Loading editor
    • I feel maybe the "venom turning you evil" will turn out to have been imagined. Those who got bitten by cobras slowly lost their minds and gave in to darkness. Unlike Scar, Kion will eventually learn the truth. The tree of lfe quest won't be for nothing, as the venom could potentially kill him.

        Loading editor
    • I hope so. Like the venom only causes a lion to act more agressive and that's it but not evil.

Like, from what I recall in Lion King, Scar was only aggressive twice in the whole movie. When SImba was a cub towards Mufasa and when Simba was an adult. So the defition of evil isn't going around destroying things.

    • Scar already viewed himself as superior to everyone else. All it took to push him forward was a strange lion and his snake pal.

        Loading editor
    • Aha so we finally got an explaination after all. The Lion Guard went to the Tree of Life for Kion and Ono to find the cures they needed after being injured in the final battle of Scar explaining his disappearance from this sequel.

    • Lions of the Outlands is a midquel, and the 2nd film ends during Season 3, while Kion and co. are traveling from the Kenya to India and back.

Especially because that is what real male lions do.
