  • Hey everybody,

This website I visit too called DVDizzy and I'm trying to move on for not visiting, becuase the users keep calling John Lasseter and of people who work for Disney lied to the people saying they will do hand drawn animation eventually, because they keep saying it's up to the directors. But they're accusing John and Disney for being liars and breaking their promise for hand drawn animated movies. I don't know if they're being cynical or telling truth. Do you guys think that John, Ed and other people working at Disney lied to us for not having hand drawn animation?

    • I don't think they really so much lied to us so much as they still haven't quite figured out how to bring hand-drawn animation back. Also, I think that despite their claims of being a more director-driven studio now, the exectutives still have a grip on the studio; perhaps not to the same extent as Eisner and Katzenberg, but they still have control over them nonetheless. Really, now after Princess and the Frog and Winnie the Pooh, if they really want hand-drawn animation to come back, they'd have to be not afraid to stand up to the higher-ups to have their film in that style and hold their ground to make their vision a reality. Besides, it's not like they'd have to pour millions and millions of dollars into it; they already have a ton of franchises that make them obscene amounts of money, so I think they'd be fine in investing in a less expensive 2D film that will return a lot more (if promoted well, not released next to a big blockbuster, and it's actually good that is), even if it's not the next Frozen or anything.

It did, but I don't think he said 2D animation is dead, per se, just in hibernation until a director comes along who really wants to do a hand-drawn feature and try to breath new life into the style. There doesn't appear to be one now, but in the future there may be.

    • I wouldn't say they're lying. There's a lot of pressure for 3D films because it's so popular right now. Considering how poorly their last 2D film went, they're probably reluctant to give it another shot, even if they do want to do it.

I don't think it's gone forever, it's too fantastic and imo, much more impressive than 3D. They know what's best for the company and their movies and may just be waiting for the opportune moment to bring it out again.

    • It's not going to disappear. If that did happen then there's going to be a lot of complaints. Hand drawn animation was one of the things Disney is known for.

    • I would like to say is thank you guys for being honest and not being too cynical. I hope the people of dvdizzy will learn from this, and so do I.

    • we can all hope traditional animation will be revived after Gigantic.

        Loading editor
    • At this point, after 6 years since Winnie The Pooh, and the departure of basically all the Renaissance animators (Glen Keane, Andreas Deja, Nik Ranieri, Kathy Zielinski, Ruben A. Aquino, Bruce W. Smith, Pres Romanillos, Duncan Marjoribanks, with the sole remaining member being Eric Goldberg, who just does animation tests and, more recently, the very few hand-drawn parts in Moana), plus ZERO interest by Lasseter & co., then yes, I am prone to say that hand drawn animation is pretty much dead.

Unless they finally step it up with Meander or do something so visually impressive hand-drawn, they won't do anything else apart from animation tests. Which is really sad.

I don't hate CGI, but it has become so samey to look at and EVERYONE is using it nowadays.

Now, if they could rehire Roger Allers back. Look at his latest movie : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9dY5zkwK5M

Imagine an animation like this brought to the UPTENTH level by Disney !

    • 2D Hand-drawn Animation is not dead. There will be more hand-drawn animated features plus there will be more sequels to the animated classics. If only Rick Rich, Broose Johnson, Brian Pimental, and Darrell Rooney were here.

        Loading editor
    • @Hassanhosny241 : How can you be so sure ? Also, more sequels don't warrant more hand-drawn animation.

        Loading editor
    • Oh yes, they do and they will. Please try to remember White-Bear-King-Valemon! Convince Disney to create an animated feature out of it.
