Kind of a continuation of "Who will be the villain in Moana?", but that one's getting kinda long (especially during one point where it went off-topic in a discussion about whether a Sonic villain was lame or not), plus now we have a better idea on who or what it might be.
So, based on trailers and info that have been released, it seems there are two candidates for Moana villain, and hopefully not another surprise villain.
The lava witch shown in trailers. Maui asks Moana if she ever fought a lava monster. She seems more menacing than Tamatoa, as it's implied Tamatoa is a comical villain.
Then there's Tamatoa. He is certainly in the right position to be main villain, having stolen Maui's magical fish hook which would give him lots of power, and Maui's mission is to get it back.
So, which of them will be the villain? If so, what role will the other one play? The secondary antagonist (such as the Carnotaur to Kron)? A servant of the other? (no, not The Other, you know what I mean) Or a more minor villain only encountered once?
Who will the villain in Moana be?
And while we're at it... will Disney continue their new villain tradition (besides the surprise villain bit), or revive the old one not seen in an animated Disney movie since King Candy's demise?
I'd like to speculate how he could die, but I still think Disney is consciously deciding not to kill the villain anymore, reserving deaths for family members of the hero. (But The Lion King did both)
Or, maybe the Lava Witch is the villain. Like in Clash of the Titans, Hades is the villain but Medusa is the one whose head they need to defeat him (or rather his servant the kraken). So, maybe we only see Tamatoa when they confront him near the end and get the fish hook, and then Maui uses it to defeat the Lava Witch.
...or not, Maui made it sound like fighting a lava monster is something casual. I don't know, too many unknowns but there is one thing I'm sure of, despite what the votes say though they almost gave me confidence
Yeah, King Candy was established as the villain from the beginning. They did do a twist where they make us think he isn't really evil, and then the twist where it's revealed he is after all, and the biggest twist wasn't that he was the villain, but that his true identity was Turbo
And she turned out to be Te Fiti in disguise, and naturally was restored to her original self (though the fact remains that Disney chose to make her turn out to be Te Fiti in the first place), while Tamatoa remains trapped to do a Sebastian reference
If a main villain dies in any Disney movie in the future, if King Candy does not remain the last Disney villain death, then I will watch Twilight. Star Wars also consciously avoids this now because The Force Awakens was similar to A New Hope in terms of plot, yet Hux wasn't on the Starkiller when it blew, unlike Tarkin when the Death Star exploded
