The Tikes are toys that appear in the Toy Story franchise, first introduced in the 1995 Disney/Pixar animated feature film Toy Story. They are based on the toys from the Toddle Tots toyline by real-life toy company Little Tikes.
Background[]
Personalities[]
Although eager, the Tikes have a mischievous child-like personality, often shown in groups. While many of them are identical in having the same size, they often appear with a large amount of designs and professions, often communicating through unintelligible, high-pitched squeaks.
Types[]
Most Tikes in the Toy Story franchise have an egg-shaped appearance with freckles below their eyes. They have a distinguished appearance and have different types of professions judged by the headwear that they wear:
- Firemen Tikes
- Cap Tike
- Shriner Tike
- Cowboy Tike
- Hunter Tike
- Doc Tike
- School Kid Tike
- Painter Tike
- Blue Cap Tike
- Bald Tike
- Crossing Guard Tike
- Sailor Tike
Appearances[]
Toy Story[]
When Andy is using Mr. Potato Head to play One-Eyed Bart, the Tikes are seen portraying hostages of Potato Head but not before bringing in Woody to the rescue. Later, a group of Firemen Tikes are seen boarding the Toddle Tots Fire Truck on their way to the staff meeting followed by more Tikes being seen in the crowd of other toys in the room. Later, when Andy's guests are arriving towards his house during his birthday, some Tikes join the toys looking out of the window. They are later seen when Woody tasks Sarge's Green Army Men to report the gifts Andy's guests brought to him. Later when Andy returns to his room, the Tikes are seen returning to their spots in a frantic manner.
When Andy and his mother are moving to another house, some of the Tikes are seen amongst many of Andy's other toys inside the Egg Man Movers truck, where they were awakened by Woody, which the rest of Andy's toys accuse Woody of being a traitor - although they change their minds when Lenny reports to Woody that he is using RC to save Buzz Lightyear. Later after Andy moved to a new house with Woody and Buzz with him, the Tikes are last seen celebrating Christmas with the other toys with Andy and Molly getting their Christmas presents.
Toy Story 2[]
The Tikes that appeared in the predecessor return in this sequel with a few other Tikes. The Firemen Tikes were seen looking for Woody's lost jar in the toy box, alongside Mr. Shark and the Green Army Men. They are later seen listening to Mrs. Potato Head reading a book to them and later playing at the Lincoln Logs cabin. After a yard sale was announced, the Tikes were seen present in the roll call organized by Buzz Lightyear.
Later after Woody was kidnapped by Al McWhiggin at Al's Toy Barn, the Shriner Tike takes the role of Al's car in a plan to help Hamm figure out which way he went. The other Tikes are then seen distracted by Buzz in the middle of his investigation on the other side of the room. At the end of the film, the Tikes notice Woody bringing in new toys to Andy's room with Jessie joining in where she jumps through a Hotwheels track to bring Buster out of the room. They are last seen listening to Wheezy singing a cover of "You've Got a Friend in Me" along with the rest of Andy's toys.
Other appearances[]
In Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins, five Tikes are seen at the beginning of the film gathered to watch a Buzz Lightyear movie on VHS.
The Shriner, Doc, and Cowboy Tike also appear in an interstitial for Good Morning America, amongst the rest of Andy's toys, as a means to promote Toy Story 2.
Video game appearances[]
Toy Story: Animated StoryBook[]
The Tikes also appeared in the game during Woody's staff meeting, the part where Woody knocked Buzz off the window, and the end of the story where Andy's toys celebrated Christmas. Unlike in the original film where they did not have dialogue, the Tikes are heard talking when the player clicks on them in select scenes.
Toy Story: Activity Center[]
The Tikes also appear in this game where Slinky Dog watches them in a fight with the Green Army Men in a five-in-a-row game. The player has the option to choose as the Tikes or the Army Men in this game. They also appear in Rex's marble art section as a means to provide options and instructions for this activity.
Trivia[]
- In real-life, the Toddle Tots line was introduced in the late 1980s by Little Tikes with the Fire Truck introduced in 1986 (nine years before Toy Story was released). However, the model of this vehicle was used as a basis when the film went on a revision in 1988. This set came with four firefighter figurines with a dog (not in the films). The rest of the Tikes seen in the franchise were not based on real-life existing Tikes, except for the Sailor Tike with a different coloration.
- The Tikes were erroneously identified as "Weebles" in the closed captions for the 2005 home video releases of Toy Story on VHS and DVD as part of the film's 10th anniversary. This is in fact an error, as the Weebles were manufactured by Hasbro while the Tikes were based on the Toddle Tots by the Little Tikes company. It is also to note that the fire truck the Tikes board on even has a Little Tikes label.
- Because they were not seen during the events of Toy Story 3, it is likely that all the Tikes and the Toddle Tots Fire Truck were either sold during a yard sale, donated, or given away before for after events, leaving their fates unknown.
- Toy Story: Animated StoryBook, to date, is the only time that the Tikes are heard speaking. The scenes where they are heard talking are during the scenes where the player clicks on them to help Woody and Buzz into the moving van where they say, "Get real, we have no arms!", and in the end of the story where one of the Tikes gives one of them mittens for a present who replies to them, "Just what I needed."
