Timothy Allen Dick, known professionally as Tim Allen, is an American actor, voice actor, comedian, director, producer, and screenwriter. He is best known for his numerous roles in film and television, such as playing Jason Nesmith in the 1999 sci-fi comedy film Galaxy Quest, Joe Scheffer in the 2001 Fox comedy-drama film Joe Somebody, Luther Krank in the 2004 Christmas-themed family comedy film Christmas with the Kranks, Jack Shepard/Captain Zoom in the 2006 superhero comedy film Zoom, and Tommy Zelda in the 2010 comedy film Crazy on the Outside.

For Disney, he most notably voiced Buzz Lightyear in Disney/Pixar's Toy Story franchise. He also portrayed Scott Calvin/Santa Claus in The Santa Clause franchise, Michael Cromwell in Jungle 2 Jungle, Dave Douglas in the 2006 remake of The Shaggy Dog, Dr. Doug Madsen in Wild Hogs, Eliot Arnold in the 2002 Touchstone Pictures film Big Trouble, and the narrator in the 2012 Disneynature documentary film Chimpanzee. Additionally, he played Tim "The Toolman" Taylor in the ABC (now Freeform) sitcom Home Improvement and Mike Baxter in Last Man Standing.

In 1999, Allen was named a Disney Legend, claiming the record for shortest time between his first contribution for Disney (in 1991, when he first started to work on Home Improvement) and being named a Disney Legend, until Phil Collins beat said record in 2002.

Allen was born in Denver, Colorado. He is the third oldest of six children of Martha Katherine (née Fox), a community-service worker, and Gerald M. Dick, a real estate agent. Allen has two older brothers, two younger brothers, and a younger sister. His father died in a car accident in November 1964, colliding with a drunk driver when Allen was 11. Two years later, his mother married her high school sweetheart, a business executive, and moved with her six children to Birmingham, Michigan, to be with her new husband and his three children. Allen has said the move meant going from "being in a cool group at one school to being at the bottom [of the social hierarchy at another]."

Allen attended Seaholm High School in Birmingham, where he was in theater and music classes (resulting in his love of classical piano). He then attended Central Michigan University before transferring to Western Michigan University in 1974. At Western Michigan, Allen worked at the student radio station WIDR. In 1976, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in communications, specializing in radio and television production, with a split minor in philosophy and design.
