Tombstone? I can't lie. I kinda like it.” - ―Big Donovan and Lonnie[src]
Tombstone (real name Alonzo Thompson "Lonnie" Lincoln) is a Marvel Comics character that appeared in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. He is Peter Parker's former classmate and the former captain of the football team.
Tombstone was created by Gerry Conway and Alex Saviuk.
Background[]
Lonnie Lincoln is a teenager who excels in school, especially science, and has a passion for football. He enjoys sports and studying. He seems to come from a less fortunate family background as he seems to live in a more rundown neighborhood, but tries to live positively as much as he can despite the hardships.
Role in the Series[]
Season one[]
Lonnie Lincoln appears in the animated series, set in a different universe to the time MCU timeline, and befriends Peter Parker on his first day at Rockford T. Bales High School. The two are partnered up for science class and bond over their talents for the subject. Within the next few months, he begins a relationship with Peter's childhood friend and crush, Pearl Pangan.
In "Hitting the Big Time", Lonnie willingly joins the gang that his brother is part of to help him escape, after learning he got arrested the day before. Lonnie is pushed around by the boss and tries to stand up to him. Lonnie's work with the gang continues into the following episode, where he is forced into a fight with the gang, against the rival gang. During the groups' fight, Lonnie is almost killed by Scorpion until he is saved by one of his gang members. Lonnie saves his boss' life, who thanks him and gives him the name Tombstone.
In "Duel With the Devil", things between Lonnie and Pearl are getting tense as he isn't telling her about the 110 and doesn't spend time with her. As a result, Lonnie is kicked off of the team but doesn't tell his parents. Pearl and Lonnie break up in "Tangled Web", as his business with the 110 gets too much for her. Lonnie continues working for the 110 and in "Hero or Menace", Lonnie is thrown into a van during a fight that gives him strength to fight the Scorpion alongside Spider-Man, leading to his defeat, which Spider-Man thanks him for. In the season finale, Lonnie ditches his letterman jacket, quitting school and relocates the 110 to a new hideout, becoming the new leader of the group.
Trivia[]
- In the comics, Lonnie Lincoln becomes known as Tombstone. He is given the nickname in the fifth episode.
- This is the first time the character appears in any Spider-Man TV media as a teenager.
- The comics established Lonnie as having albinism, though in this series he does not have it.
- After Lonnie receives his powers, Spider-Man asks if he is now a super soldier, comparing him to Bucky Barnes.
- In the season finale, Lonnie develops gray pigmentation in his fingertips, this is a reference to his appearance as Tombstone in the comics and the video games in 2018 and 2023.
- The gray pigmentation occurs in the show because Lonnie is exposed to an unknown chemical compound. Similarly, in the 90s Spider-Man series, he is transformed after falling in a vat of chemicals.
