The Toy Dog is a character from the 1933 Silly Symphony short Lullaby Land.

Background[]

The Toy Dog is a calico[1]-made plush toy of a dog, which the Baby holds with him. Although shown to be inanimate at first, the Toy Dog later comes to life when he and the Baby find themselves in Lullaby Land together, being a sentient toy. Despite his happy-go-lucky, yet curious personality, he is shown to be protective of the Baby who goes into dangers like when he interacts with objects that he shouldn't be using.

Physical appearance[]

The Toy Dog, to describe, is a plush toy resembling that of a canine with a calico textile all over his body, long black ears, yellow fur on the tip of his legs. He also wears a yellow bowtie around his neck.

Role in the short[]

The Toy Dog is first seen lying down next to the Baby in his crib, just before the two end up in a dream world known as "Lullaby Land". As they land, the Toy Dog follows alongside his companion while curiously exploring across the landscape of the dream world. He then sniffs a nearby tree which is holding a bunch of rattles, only for it to shoo him away. Later, the Toy Dog and the Baby both hear a parade occurring across Lullaby Land, which the two watch it just before following them across the landscape.

Later, the Toy Dog and the Baby both enter the Forbidden Garden where the encounter dangerous objects that babies must not use. As the Toy Dog explores by himself, he encounters some sentient dangerous objects - one of them being an anthropomorphic pincushion which pokes it with its needle. In revenge, the Toy Dog then rips it apart just before noticing the Baby being tempted to use a match to which after using it, the Dog warns him that the objects located within the area are dangerous, leading him and the Baby to find a way out of this area just before they escape from a group of matches, which leap into the water, followed by a group of Boogeymen stalking them. However, just as the Boogeymen disappear, the Toy Dog and the Baby both encounter the Sandman who introduces himself to the two. Just as he shows the two a bag of magic sand, the two attempt to escape, but the Sandman sprinkles a bunch of sand onto the Baby and the Dog, just before finding themselves at home. The Toy Dog is last seen sleeping with the Baby in bed just before the short ends.

Trivia[]

  • While he does not appear in Storybook Land Canal Boats in Disneyland, the giant patchwork quilt (the area where the Toy Dog arrives) was stitched together using more than twenty real plants and flowers, which is inspired by the one from Lullaby Land.
  • In the book adaptation of Lullaby Land published by John Canemaker, the toy dog has a yellow coloration all over his body and a red bowtie which he wears around his neck.[2]
