―The Troll after spotting Giselle

The Troll is a minor character from Disney's 2007 animated/live-action feature film Enchanted and its 2022 sequel Disenchanted.

Background[]

Physical appearance[]

The Troll is a giant, greenish-yellow creature with orange eyes, white fangs, four fingers, three toes, olive greenish fingernails and toenails, and purplish shell-shaped earrings, as well as some olive greenish spots on a few parts of his body, including his chin, stomach, and left arm. He also wears a brown loincloth, which, in the first film, had some torn cloths in different colors. He also wore a pair of brown cuffs on his wrists, which he lacked in the sequel.

Appearances[]

Enchanted[]

The Troll is first seen where Prince Edward ties him down. As Nathaniel congratulates the prince for catching the Troll (which, according to him, was the tenth troll he caught in a month), he climbs up the Troll's face, he accidentally gets his hand stuck in his nose. He pulls it out and apologizes to the Troll, with the big creature calmly responding with "Oh, that's okay." After Edward leaves on his horse, Destiny, to see Giselle after hearing her voice, Nathaniel begins to worry about the ordeal, especially what Queen Narissa would think if she heard about Edward falling in love with a girl. The Troll, meanwhile, becomes enthralled by Giselle's singing that he sings along. Nathaniel hears this and gets an idea. He releases the Troll to track down Giselle so he could eat her, passing by Edward while still singing. Edward sees this and realizes the princess was in danger, so he proceeds to chase after the Troll to save Giselle, proclaiming that he "shall not prevail".

Later at Giselle's house, the Troll peeks his eye through the window, which makes the animals frightened. He reaches his hand through the window, trying to grab Giselle, but just when he thinks he does, he spots her escaping through another window. Realizing that he had actually grabbed the makeshift prince mannequin Giselle and the forest animals made earlier, the Troll becomes outraged at Giselle's "cheating", smashing the mannequin in his hand, and gives chase to her up on a tree, announcing his intentions to eat her. Pip tries to save Giselle herself by jumping on the Troll's head. Suddenly, the tree branch begins to weigh down due to the giant creature's weight (although Pip initially thought it was him doing so at first). Just when the Troll is about to grab Giselle and eat her, Prince Edward throws his sword at one of his cuffs and arrives to rescue Giselle, who then falls off the branch but grabs on to another one. Unfortunately for the Troll, this results in him being catapulted by the tree branch he was holding on, sending him flying in the sky.

The Troll was last seen near the end where he, along with other forest animals is waiting to get their books signed by Pip.

Disenchanted[]

The Troll reappears in this film, this time on good terms with Edward, as well as his queen Nancy and the other forest animals. Though still large, he is somewhat shorter than he was in the first film, as human characters (like Edward) are not small enough fit in his hands. He also wears a plain brown loincloth and no longer wears the brown cuffs on his wrists.

He is first seen fishing at a lake at the beginning of the film, with two other trolls relaxing nearby.

Later, the Troll is seen with Edward, Nancy, and other Andalasian creatures when Morgan arrives in Andalasia (via a well in their new home in Monroeville, which also served as a portal to Andalasia). The Troll is heard moaning with worry when a fairy explains to Morgan about Anadalsia's magic being taking away from their world, due to the presence of a large hole in the sky that appeared the previous night. This was due to Giselle using the wishing wand Edward and Nancy gave to her newborn daughter, Sofia, as a belated birthday present, to wish for a fairytale life in Monroeville, which ended up causing the magic of Andalasia to be taken away as a result. After Edward tells Morgan that everything in Andalasia would be gone permanently if the spell couldn't be reversed as soon as possible, the Troll becomes so upset about the thought of their home disappearing forever that he hugs Edward tightly, but the king loosens himself from the Troll's grasp and comforts the giant creature.

The Troll is seen a couple of times during "Love Power", first after Morgan's torn dress transforms into a beautiful dress, thanks to the magic of a tree that contained memories of Giselle and Morgan, and later when he, Edward, and the other forest creatures watch Morgan and Nancy leaving for Monroeville (named Monroelasia as a result of Giselle's wish) to reverse the spell and save Giselle and their respective worlds.

Later, the Troll is seen through a fountain in the castle of Malvina Monroe (who had become an evil queen as a result of Giselle's spell), apparently becoming weak due to the spell's effects. He is not seen again for the rest of the film, although it is assumed that he survived along with the rest of Andalasia by the end of the film, given how everything is turned back to normal after Morgan wishes to be home with her mother, Giselle, and that Edward and Pip, both of whom are Andalasian themselves, appear at the end of the film.

Trivia[]

  • When the Troll gets catapulted off the tree in the first film, he shouts a deeper version of the Goofy holler.
  • Parts of the Troll's clothes in Enchanted, are based on the casual outfits of several Disney Princesses: part of his loincloth is made up of the commoner outfits of Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, and Belle; while the shells on his earrings are the same as the ones from Ariel's bra.
