- This was the first Disney produced film to have a black director at the helm.
- The movie was inspired by a famous sketch on Saturday Night Live titled "White Like Me", which Andy Breckman wrote, wherein Eddie Murphy decides to go undercover as a white man.
- Charles Lane cast himself in the film so that he wouldn't get fired. Additionally, he made uncredited revisions to Andy Breckman's script. He asked Robert Townsend if he could borrow a scene from his film Hollywood Shuffle, which he allowed.
