"Dos Oruguitas" is a song that is featured in Disney's 2021 animated feature film Encanto. Performed by Sebastián Yatra and written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the song tells the story of two caterpillars growing to become butterflies and finding their own future.

Background[]

The song is first heard during the tragic flashback of Alma Madrigal and her late husband Pedro whom they first met each other during the Day of the Little Candles. Throughout their relationship, they were married at a local church and sometime after their wedding, Alma and Pedro returned home where Alma is excited to have children. However, when their village is under attack by a group of horsemen, Pedro, Alma, and the rest of the survivors were forced to evacuate and later at a river, Pedro comforts his wife and his family's three newborn children, explaining that he will stall the attackers to buy them time. However, Pedro is killed by the soldiers while Alma mourns the loss of her husband. Suddenly, the blast from the candle, imbued with magic, manages to repel the soldiers while giving Alma and the refugees a safe haven. Later in her family's new home, Alma continues to grieve over the loss of Pedro before resolving to ensure their second chance of living peacefully to which the song pauses shortly, wherein the present she realizes her fear of losing it caused her to lose sight of her family and consequentially the miracle's magic.

Following this admission, after Mirabel understands the flashback and assures Alma that it is not too late to make things right, Alma explains to Mirabel that Pedro's legacy was sent to her just as Mirabel and Alma reconcile as the song resumes again with golden butterflies flying around them as they share an embrace for the first time after 10 years (which truly fulfills Bruno's vision). After the song, Bruno, riding on a horse, appears before Mirabel and Alma to defend his niece before Alma happily reunites with him and hugs him (much to his surprise). Her resolve renewed and knowing how to truly help their family, Mirabel rides her, Alma, and Bruno back home.

The song is later heard during the end credits after "Colombia, Mi Encanto" where the Madrigal family members were able to rebuild the Casa Madrigal with an English-language cover titled "Two Oruguitas" heard in the English version during the credits. The lyrics for this English-language cover are not a direct translation of the Spanish lyrics but rather adapted translations of the lyrics.

Lyrics[]

Siguen creciendo, no saben cuándo

(Nuestro milagro)
(Nuestro milagro)
(Nuestro milagro)

Ay mariposas, no se aguanten más
Hay que crecer aparte y volver
Hacia adelante seguirás
Ya son milagros, rompiendo crisálidas
Hay que volar, hay que encontrar
Su propio futuro

Ay mariposas, no se aguanten más
Hay que crecer aparte y volver
Hacia adelante seguirás
Ya son milagros, rompiendo crisálidas
Hay que volar, hay que encontrar
Su propio futuro

Ay mariposas, no se aguanten más
Hay que crecer aparte y volver
Hacia adelante seguirás
Ya son milagros, rompiendo crisálidas
Hay que volar, hay que encontrar
Su propio futuro

Two little caterpillars in love
They spend their nights and early mornings
Full of hunger, they keep walking
And navigating a world that changes and keeps changing
Navigating a world that changes and keeps changing

Two little caterpillars stop the wind
As they hold each other with warmth and consent
They keep growing, but they don't know when
To look for a corner shelter, the time keeps changing
They are inseperable, and the time keeps changing

Oh little caterpillars, don't hold on each other anymore
You have to grow apart and come back
That's the way forward
Miracles are coming, chrysalises are coming
You have to leave and build
Your own future

Oh little caterpillars, don't hold on each other anymore
You have to grow apart and come back
That's the way forward
Miracles are coming, chrysalises are coming
You have to leave and build
Your own future

Two little caterpillars feeling disoriented
In two cocoons all bundled up
With new dreams they're already lacking
All you have to do is do what is necessary in the world that keeps changing
Knocking down its walls and then our miracle is coming

(Our miracle)
(Our miracle)
(Our miracle)

Oh, butterflies, don't hold on each other anymore
You have to grow apart and come back
That's the way forward
You are already finding miracles, breaking chrysalises
You have to fly, and you have to find
Your own future

Oh, butterflies, don't hold on each other anymore
You have to grow apart and come back
That's the way forward
You are already finding miracles, breaking chrysalises
You have to fly, and you have to find
Your own future

Oh, butterflies, don't hold on each other anymore
You have to grow apart and come back
That's the way forward
You are already finding miracles, breaking chrysalises
You have to fly, and you have to find
Your own future

Two oruguitas in love and yearning
Spend every evening and morning learning
To hold each other, their hunger burning
To navigate a world that turns, and never stops turning
Together in this world that turns, and never stops turning

Two oruguitas against the weather
The wind grows colder but they're together
They hold each other, no way of knowing
They're all they have for shelter and something inside them is growing
They long to stay together but something inside them is growing

Ay, oruguitas, don't you hold on too tight
Both of you know it's your time to grow
To fall apart, to reunite
Wonders await you just on the other side
Trust they'll be there and start to prepare
The way for tomorrow

Ay, oruguitas, don't you hold on too tight
Both of you know it's your time to grow
To fall apart, to reunite
Wonders await you just on the other side
Trust they'll be there and start to prepare
The way for tomorrow

Two oruguitas cocooned and waiting
Each in their own world anticipating
What happens after the rearranging?
And so afraid of change in a world that never stops changing
So let the walls come down, the world will never stop changing

(Never stop changing)
(Never stop changing)
(Never stop changing)

Ay, mariposas, don't you hold on too tight
Both of you know it's your time to go
To fly apart, to reunite
Wonders surround you, just let the walls come down
Don't look behind you, fly till you find
Your way toward tomorrow

Ay, mariposas, don't you hold on too tight
Both of you know it's your time to go
To fly apart, to reunite
Wonders surround you, just let the walls come down
Don't look behind you, fly till you find
Your way toward tomorrow

Ay, mariposas, don't you hold on too tight
Both of you know it's your time to go
To fly apart, to reunite
Wonders surround you, just let the walls come down
Don't look behind you, fly till you find
Your way toward tomorrow

Ay mariposas, no se aguanten más
Hay que crecer aparte y volver
Hacia adelante seguirás
Ya son milagros, rompiendo crisálidas
Hay que volar, hay que encontrar
Su propio futuro

Ay mariposas, no se aguanten más
Hay que crecer aparte y volver
To fly apart, to reunite
Wonders surround you, just let the walls come down
Don't look behind you, fly till you find
Your way toward tomorrow

Trivia[]

  • This was later performed at the 2022 Oscars.
  • Before Abuela Alma and Mirabel hug, a yellow butterfly flutters near the river and lands on a reed. This is the very same thing interpreted when Bruno made a vision in Antonio's room, the very one that says that Mirabel must hug Isabela to save the magic. Since Bruno said events weren't happening in chronological order and the person Mirabel embraced was shrouded at first, the butterfly's presence meant the person Mirabel would hug was actually Alma all along as the matriarch's unresolved grief was emotionally hurting the family.
    • Since Isabela bears a resemblance to Alma in her younger years, this further symbolizes Mirabel helping her grandmother gain closure with her past.
  • During the montage of Alma and Pedro's relationship, their children's gifts are referenced; they are shown eating at the fountain (Julieta), the sun is shining on their wedding day (Pepa), and when Alma reveals they are expecting triplets (Bruno).
  • Lin-Manuel Miranda stated in past interviews that the chorus of this song has an Easter Egg that nods towards the famous song "Under the Sea" from The Little Mermaid, due to the fact that it was the song and movie that made Miranda want to go into songwriting.
