Tyrus Wong was a Chinese-American artist, director, and animator, whose most famous work was as art director for Walt Disney's Bambi. Wong's pastels and watercolors served as inspiration and influenced the backgrounds and overall look of the film.[2]
Wong was at Walt Disney Animation Studios from 1938 to 1941, and left shortly after finishing Bambi due to the Disney animators' strike.
Named a Disney Legend in 2001,[3] Wong's work has continued to be influential even to this day. In August 2013 through February 2014, Wong's artwork was exhibited in a career retrospective at The Walt Disney Family Museum, entitled: Water to Paper, Paint to Sky: The Art Of Tyrus Wong.[4]
Wong died on December 30, 2016. The Bambi Signature Collection release in 2017 includes a lithograph dedicated to Wong's passing in 2016.
