Uliana is the main antagonist in Descendants: The Rise of Red. She is the sister of Ursula and the aunt of Uma.[1] She is the leader of a gang at Merlin Academy, making her closest friends as a teenager Maleficent, Hades, Morgie, and Hook.
Background[]
Personality[]
Uliana is a teenage wicked sea-witch and mean-girl bully, who seems confident and outspoken on the outside, but is said to be insecure with having Ursula as her older sister. She feels as if she must become just as brutal as her or worse. She is focused and determined on getting what she wants including her revenge. Otherwise, she has a sassy and memorable attitude which is taken from Ursula.
Physical appearance[]
Uliana is a beautiful brown-skinned girl with thick, long beautiful blue, green, teal, and yellow locks which she wears in a crown. Her makeup is lightly made, with an exception to her turquoise and purple colored eye-shadow. Her outfits are always made by the top designers of the sea. She wears a sea green leather jacket with purple shoulder pads and gold lining as well as green fabric that resembles electricity. Uliana sports a teal and purple sequin shirt under her jacket as well. She also wears a black belt with her emblem, a eel wrapped around a tentacle along with turquoise and purple fabrics under her belt to make a skirt with aqua colored pants with gems, and black combat boots with purple straps and platforms. Even in her human form, her eight tentacles are always behind her.
Appearances[]
Descendants: The Rise of Red[]
Red and Chloe Charming meet Uliana in the past as a student at Merlin Academy, being a spiteful bully who deliberately targets Ella and Bridget for, as she states, "standing in her way". She dislikes how Bridget is always capable of seeing good in people and teases her with her gang. For instance, when she is offered one of her flamingo-feathered cupcakes, Uliana snatches them in an attempt to steal all the feathers which are well-known for causing mischievous side effects and places them all in her mouth despite several warnings. As a result, she is temporarily transformed into her flamingo-headed self, where she chases Bridget and Ella around and falls into a pool of water where she revives herself.
This is where her revenge started for the princess of Wonderland and so she planned to use on of Principal Merlin's spellbooks to pull a prank on her during a celebration so she could ridicule her in front of an audience and finally remove her out of her tentacle's ways.
At Merlin Academy, after leaving Morgie watching, Uliana goes with Hook, Maleficent and Hades to Principal Merlin's office to look for the spellbook. After finding the Sorcerer's Cookbook on the floor, they open it, but the book causes the four to become petrified. Because of this, Red and Chloe, who were already there, appear before them and snatch the book from them. After that, Principal Merlin arrives, finding the four young villains petrified, and telling them that as punishment they will be like this for a long time.
Trivia[]
- In The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea, Ursula has a sister named Morgana.
- Uliana takes inspiration from Morgana, as both are Ursula's younger sisters who are in competition and dislike being overshadowed and feel the need to stand out. Uliana also shares a similar green-coded color palette and a scheming, vengeful attitude in reference to her.
- Uliana's name was originally going to be "Ulyana" spelled with an "y" instead of an "i" but the spelling of her name was changed for an unknown reason.
- She was initially announced as Uma's younger sister named Ulya, although this was just a mistake on Disney' part since she was always supposed to be a past character.
- She has several similarities with her niece, Uma:
- Both Uliana and Uma have their own gangs that include a member of the Hook family.
- Like Uma has history with Mal, Uliana has history with Mal's mother.
- Like Uma in Escape from the Isle of the Lost, Uliana has worked together with Hades.
- Instead of an octopus, her icon is a moray eel wrapping around a trident. This could be a reference to her sister's pet eels, Flotsam and Jetsam.
