Vernon, or Vern for short, is a fictional character "appearing" alongside Ernest P. Worrell in a series of commercials and shorts, as well as some of the Disney media via Touchstone Pictures.
Background[]
History[]
Vern was created by the Nashville advertising agency Carden and Cherry, by executives John R. Cherry III and Coke Sams. He "appeared" in commercials alongside Ernest P. Worrell, played by Jim Varney. In actuality, the viewer never saw Vern, instead, they saw through Vern's eyes as Ernest addressed their neighbor "friend". Vern never uttered a word, but it was heavily implied that Vern hated Ernest and wanted nothing to do with him. Some commercials ended with some misfortune befalling Vern's domicile (usually due to Ernest's ineptitude), and occasionally, Vern would get one over Ernest by directly, or indirectly, harming his neighbor, though Ernest blew this off as Vern simply joking around.
Personality[]
Vern is implied to be a very grumpy individual, mainly due to Ernest's constant intrusions into his life. It is unknown if he himself is outwardly mean, or is simply pushed to the brink by Ernest. Based on the fact that he remains silent and rarely ever puts up a fight with Ernest, implies that he has at least grown used to his neighbor's shenanigans. Vern may also have a softer side, as he apparently sleeps with a teddy bear.
Trivia[]
- Vern did manage to make one physical appearance in the 1989 season of Comic Relief USA. Here he was played by Doug Cox and was portrayed attempting to get intimate with someone, only for Ernest to, as usual, interrupt. It would be the only time he would ever be seen.[1]
- While Vern does not directly appear in Ernest Goes to Camp, he is in the trailer for the film, being woken up by Ernest so that he can see the new trailer. Ernest does name drop him once in the film.
