Vidi the Snipe, better known by his full name Video, is one of the main protagonists from the 1944 Disney animated short The Pelican and the Snipe.

Personality[]

Vidi is described as the bird who watches his sidekick Monte with untiring devotion. He is often shown trying to prevent Monte from being separated from him, especially when it comes to Monte's dream of flying. However, when Vidi placed an anchor on Monte, the latter fell into the ocean and became furious that he could have drowned, thanks to Vidi's tricks. This, however, hurt Vidi's feelings as he fears that Monte is no longer his friend. However, when Monte noticed that his friend is in trouble, he even rescued Vidi as he and Monte become best friends again. In spite of his mischievousness, Vidi is also shown to think of a solution of what he should do first before a bad thing would happen to Monte. During the end, Vidi tied a rope on Monte so that he can fly around the lighthouse as the best solution to protect his friend.

Physical appearance[]

Vidi has a plumage of light tan feathers all around his body, orange beak, as well as a white plumage on his belly, he is also shown to have long orange legs due to the fact that he is a snipe.

Vidi and his sidekick Monte are seen on top of a lighthouse while the former is seen keeping an eye on Vidi while the narrator describes Vidi as the one who watches Monte with untiring devotion, which the latter doesn't even realize him for this. As Monte begins to sleepwalk on the lighthouse while dreaming of a dive bomber, Vidi saves him from falling off the lighthouse as well as avoiding a hostile shark. To Vidi's frustration, he places a blanket with nails on the edges to keep Monte from falling off the lighthouse, much to Vidi feeling exhausted. However, the next day, Vidi rests after feeling exhausted from last night to which as Monte tries to wake him up, he could not wake up his friend for the next day, even the airplanes that pass through him, much to him feeling exhausted from last night.

The next night, Vidi taught of a new plan to keep Monte out of danger, but Monte kept flying, despite a rope tied on his right foot, much to Vidi's worry. Vidi lassoes his beak so that he wouldn't fall off, much to Vidi feeling exhausted about this. Vidi began to think of a solution, but told Monte to relax while Vidi keeps thinking of a solution to keep his friend safe. However, after thinking hard, Vidi places an anchor on Monte, but despite this, he fell off into the water, much to his frustration. The next day, Monte became frustrated with Vidi that he could have drowned into the ocean from last night for his mischievous tricks as well as destroying his faith, making him very angry about this, telling Vidi to never darken the lighthouse again. This, however, hurt Vidi's feelings, fearing that he is no longer his friend again.

The next night, when Monte sleeps and flies all alone and while sleeping, a plane wakes him up when its propellers struck him, which he realizes that what he did to Vidi was a bad idea. He felt frustrated that this was all his fault in treating Vidi that way and as he sees Vidi sleeping on a target, he rescues him from a bomb dropped by one of the planes just before it destroys the target. After Monte rescues Vidi, they became best friends again. Vidi manages to solve the problem in keeping Monte away from the lighthouse by tying a rope onto the pole of the lighthouse where Monte flies over it like a lighthouse's light, happy that Monte is his friend again.

Trivia[]

  • Vidi's full name, ”Video", is derived from "Montevideo", the Capital of Uruguay where he and Monte live.
  • Vidi was initially going to appear in The Three Caballeros alongside Monte where the Pelican and the Snipe sequence starring them was to be a segment part of the film, but it remained scrapped, resulting the short where they starred in to be released as a standalone short.
