Vitale Portfoglio is a character featured in the 2023 film A Haunting in Venice, based on the 1969 novel "Hallowe'en Party" by Agatha Christie. He is portrayed by Italian actor Riccardo Scamarico.
Background[]
In the film, Vitale serves as Poirot's bodyguard and keeps the sanctity of his retirement by repelling people seeking to employ the detective. A Venetian native and a former police officer, he also helps Poirot's investigation when the murders begin. Portfoglio is one of the guests at the Halloween party and séance that Rowena organizes in the palazzo, hoping to contact Alicia's spirit. He is also one of the suspects in the murder of Joyce Reynolds, a medium who claims to channel Alicia and reveals that she was killed by someone in the room.
Portfoglio has a motive to silence Reynolds, as he was involved in a shady deal with Alicia that went wrong and led to her death. He is a charismatic and charming man who uses his money and power to get what he wants. Vitale is also ruthless and cunning, willing to resort to violence and deception to protect his interests. He has a tense relationship with Rowena, whom he still loves but also resents for choosing her career over him. He also dislikes Maxime, whom he considers unworthy of Alicia and blames for her death.
Trivia[]
- Vitale Portfoglio is newly invented for the film. However, him being a retired police officer that aids Poirot puts in the place of Superintendent Spence, a similar character from the book. He may also serve as a fill in for Poirot's valet George.
