Walt Disney Diamond Editions is a line of DVDs and Blu-rays that began with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on October 6, 2009. Disney began re-issuing Platinum Edition titles under a new Diamond Edition range on Blu-ray, DVD, 3D, and Digital.
History
Overview
All the Platinum Edition titles will be featured in this range, but they will not necessarily be released in the same chronological order when they were released of the latter. Aladdin was originally going to be replaced by Fantasia & Fantasia 2000; however, these two films were removed from the lineup, and were instead released as a 2-Movie Collection, with Aladdin brought back as a Diamond Edition.
Disney expects to release all its Diamond titles by 2016. All these movies (except for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Bambi) are released as Digital Downloads (e.g. iTunes, Disney Digital, Amazon Instant Video).
Alice in Wonderland, Fantasia, and Dumbo were originally supposed to be released on Diamond/Platinum Edition, but due to a presumed schedule mix-up, they were only released on Special Edition. While there is a likelihood they will be released on Diamond Edition, this is not confirmed. (It is also rumored that Alice in Wonderland will come out on Diamond as a tie-in to Through The Looking Glass, which is supposed to be released in May 2016).
Frozen is rumored to become a Diamond title since the film was not released to 3D Blu-Ray in the US.
U.K./U.S. differences
Starting in 2012, some differences in Diamond Editions have come into existence between the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. In Fall 2012, One Hundred and One Dalmatians was released on Blu-Ray in the UK and Australia as a "special edition", featuring a static menu and no new special features. Some confusion arose over any upcoming American release of this title, since it apparently is still scheduled for an American release as a Diamond Edition.
Furthermore, Peter Pan was also released as a non-commemorative Special Edition in the UK on November 5, 2012. This edition featured no DisneyView to cover the black bars at the sides of the screen, a static menu and only a few bonus features, while the movie was still released as Diamond Edition in the US and Australia in early 2013.
Furthermore, Aladdin was released on Blu-Ray in the UK and Australia in Spring 2013, while still on hold in the US until at least 2015. It is unclear as to whether the new Aladdin release will be a Diamond Edition or not, as this seems to differ per country. There were also vague rumors of this new release being delayed with one them possibly being that Disney wanted to release Aladdin on Blu-ray after the Broadway musical opened.
To add to the confusion, The Jungle Book and The Little Mermaid were both confirmed as Fall 2013 Diamond Editions in the UK and Australia, while The Jungle Book was kept on hold in the US until February 11, 2014.
