- “Know that they'll be loved.”
- ―Wanda to Scarlet Witch[src]
Wanda Maximoff is a Marvel Comics character who appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. She is an alternate reality counterpart of the Scarlet Witch.
Wanda is portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen, who plays her mainstream counterpart.
She was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
Background[]
In her universe, Wanda Maximoff was a member of the Avengers. Sometime after the events in Avengers: Age of Ultron, she got retired from her superhero life.[1] Sometime later, she fell in love and had two sons (likely with Vision) in Westview, New Jersey. Eventually, she lost her partner or got divorced, leaving Wanda to raise Billy and Tommy alone.
Role in the film[]
In Earth-838, Wanda is enjoying time with her sons when her body is overtaken by as her 616 alternate self, who has used the power of the darkhold to dreamwalk into the body of this Wanda Maximoff. Professor X from this universe, tries to warn Wanda but is killed. Now controlling her 838 counterpart, Wanda becomes close to her sons again, but soon attacks the Illuminati headquarters as they are trying to stop Doctor Strange from earth-616.
Wanda's evil counterpart kills almost all the members of the Illuminati after chasing America Chavez, Doctor Strange and 838's Christine Palmer, with Baron Mordo surviving as he is fighting Strange. Wanda follows Strange, Chavez and Palmer to the safe point so she can have the book of Vishanti, but the Scarlet Witch stops controlling this version of herself, who realises she isn't with her sons, so flies home to Westview.
Sometime later, the Maximoff house is ambushed by the Scarlet Witch and Chavez, who has shown the witch what she wants, her sons. However, when Billy and Tommy become frightened of the witch form of their mother, they scream for Wanda, but she is overpowered by her alternate self, who throws her into a wall. Worried for their mother, Billy and Tommy throw things and yell at Wanda, who frightens them even more. Billy and Tommy run to their mother to assist her, but she goes over to her evil self who breaks down in tears over seeing what she has become. 838 Wanda tells 616 Wanda that her sons will be loved in this universe, while comforting her.
America closes the portal to Earth-838, allowing this Wanda to live at peace with her sons.
Trivia[]
- It is never established if this incarnation of Wanda became the Scarlet Witch, but given how different her life turned out compared to her 616 counterpart, it seems very unlikely as their personalities are different.
- It's also unknown if Wanda has Pietro as her brother, or if she has the same parents as her 616 counterpart, but it is likely.
- Elizabeth Olsen expressed her belief that this version of Wanda divorced Vision, explaining why she isn't wearing a wedding ring or the lack of his presence in the film.[2]
