"Watch Out for Lionels" is the first half of the fourth episode in the first season of Stanley.
Summary[]
Stanley's big brother, Lionel is always pestering him. What can Stanley do to defend himself? He then learns about armadillos in "The Great Big Book of Everything".
Plot[]
The episode begins with Lionel running around the house with Stanley’s toy snake, constantly teasing him with it in the process. It doesn’t stop until their dad enters the living room. He complains about the noise they’re making and tells them to stop, as he’s busy with his comic drawing.
For a while, things seem to be going okay. Stanley tries to relax, but Lionel comes back at it again, this time putting his tiger toy on top of a house plant that’s too high for him to reach. This makes Stanley really mad and he goes to tell his father, but then gets reminded that his dad is busy and doesn’t want to be interrupted. Lionel is about to get the tiger down, but then the phone rings and he leaves to answer it.
Stanley is left feeling frustrated because Lionel won’t stop pestering him. Dennis suggests that he should tell him he doesn’t like it and that he should stop being so mean. Stanley claims that Lionel isn’t always mean and that he just teases him because it seems funny.
Soon enough, things seem to be looking good as the two brothers start eating lunch together in the kitchen. But it gets sour again when Lionel finishes the last of the milk in the house. Stanley tries using his words, but Lionel takes a bite of his sandwich before running out.
Stanley thinks that if talking to Lionel isn’t going to work, maybe he should try avoiding him instead. He states that he wouldn’t have to see Lionel at all if he slept all day and stayed up all night, thus making him nocturnal. This leads to him and Dennis discussing about other nocturnal creatures, such as bats, owls, anteaters, and especially armadillos. Stanley wonders how an armadillo would handle a tough situation like this, so they decide to look in the Great Big Book of Everything.
Upon opening the book, they discover that they have a tough exterior that keeps them from getting hurt, just like a bike helmet. Once they go into the book, they find a fox, an animal that likes to bother armadillos. However, rather than fight, the armadillo curls up into a ball and does nothing. Eventually, the fox gives up and leaves. This gives Stanley an idea: instead of being bothered by Lionel, he plans to ignore him until he gets tired of teasing him.
Afterwards, Stanley is playing in the living room with his toy animals, until Lionel comes back and snatches the horse away. Stanley starts getting mad again, but then remembers what he learned from the armadillo. He then turns his back and does nothing. Lionel tries to get his attention, but to no avail. Ultimately, he gives up and stops right when their dad steps in. He states that he is proud of how Stanley handled the situation on his own. In the end, the three guys all curl up like armadillos and Mrs. Griff steps in, saying she has "one strange family".
